This pours a clear, medium-toned brown with red highlights. The head is off-white, and fairly stable - lasting most of the session.
The aroma is fantastic and enjoyably complex. Molasses, orange rind, brown sugar, lemon zest, tree sap, and carraway seed - yes, it's all over the place. To sum it up - it smells like a spicy, heavily hopped american brown ale.
The taste that follows is similar. Citrus hops and caramel malts dueling for supremacy. With these contrasting flavors, one would think the taste would be muddled with too much going on - however, Lagunitas makes this work incredibly well.
The mouthfeel is creamy and rich from some unfermented sugars, and the carbonation is appropriate. Combined with no heat from the alcohol, this beer is impressively drinkable.
I really like what Lagunitas did here, and I love this style. I would definitely recommend not cellaring this beer and drinking it fresh. If it were up to me, there would be many, many more hoppy, american brown ales - well done!
