22 oz bottle poured into a DFH snifter.
Pours clear, dark brown with a half finger of foam. Aroma is robust, malty... reminds me a bit of an Old Ale aroma, with a bit of plum and toffee notes as well. Malt aromas dominate any hops.
First sip is a bit spicy, almost like wintergreen, followed by an acidic malt flavor and with a pretty strong bitter finish. This initial rush of spicy flavor is unexpected, but not unwelcome. It certainly separates this from a traditional old ale/strong ale.
I suspect the spicy bite comes from the yeast? I'm not quite sure what to make of this beer. It is certainly unique, and quite tasty. I feel like it is going to bubble or fizz in my mouth based on the flavor profile... but it doesn't.
Overall, not my favorite Lagunitas brew, but an overall solid offering.
