pours out a rich clear garnet/brown color with ruby highlights. Nice two fingered head with a very light tan and is fluffy. Retention is good as it has some sticky lacing to the glass.
The aroma is not a strong as expected. But, it does meet the standard for the style. As the bottle says, you get a good amount of malt that hits the nose. Caramel and little alcoholic sweetness. The hops are there. Not in your face like most of Lagunita's brews are. But, there is that distinctive west coast floral and pine hops that comes out lightly in this Ale.
Sweet malt hits the palate at first. Sour bread and caramel malts are quite prevalent. Hops much more citrus than bitter pine, yet both flavors can be detected.
Goes down easy with a medium lightly carbonated body. The finish is semi-dry with a lingering toasted malt.
I'm sure the guys at Lagunita's just wanted to make a big malty beer for once with the same kind of kick, but not in you face hops. And since there is a range of ways to brew an American Strong Ale, I will not hold it against them. I am happy to have picked up a bomber of this ale.
