I always jump at the next Lagunitas "Limited" beer I can get my hands on,aging this oen did not dissapoint.Poured into a imperial pint glass a mix of russett brown and amber,a 1 1/2 finger creamy mass atop that never fully settled.A lighter mix of piney hop and caramel malt,a bit of sweetish alcohol as well.Wow what great balance on the palate, starting out big and caramelly, with some juicy fruit malt notes, then comes a hefty mix of hop oils and pine resin, not to mention big citric qualities.A full creamy feel coats the mouth, making it lush.I may rate it higher than others because I love the big hopped up,uber malty American strong ales,I love it.

Appearance - This one poured a rather boring, shiny brown in color with a mediocre head.

Smell - The malt seems rather thin and phony, contrary to the promise on the label, and a bit stale.

Taste - Again the malts disappoint. It's more like a weak bitter or American brown ale than a strong ale. The malt flavor lacks depth and distinction.

Mouthfeel - This is way too thin for the style. It's not even medium-bodied by my count and is clumsy in the cheeks.

Sinkability - I think this is the first ASA that I've dumped, and this from a well-regarded brewery. Oh the shame of it.

Reviewed from notes on 9/10/10.

A: Pours a brownish-black with a red tint. The head is stuck somewhere between khaki and white, and burns off quickly to leave an odd, sparkly retention. The lacing is light and not very sticky, but it does leave some visually fun patterns.

S: Mal-ty. I smell loads of brown sugar, caramel, and vanilla, with a touch of milk chocolate. I swear I can also smell some trademark Lagunitas piney hops in the background, along with a touch of alcoholic heat.

T: There is a little bit of coffee bitterness gracing the sides of my mouth, along with a nice frothy blend of mocha, brown sugar, caramel, and mild chocolate that disperses over the middle of my palate. But what makes the beer is the piney hoppiness that tickles the end of my tongue in the middle to end of each sip.

M: For such a big flavor, the MF is a little thin. It is on the light side of light-medium.

D: This was quite an interesting brown ale - very malty, yet with a gracious note of hops throughout. I will try it again, fo' sho'!

Poured this brownish-red, jobless recovery ale into an imperial English pint glass.

It's Lagunitas, so WTF?, it's going to be hoppy. Fragrant American hops lean more toward orange and citrus with hints of evergreen, pine, and alcohol. The malt isn't absent either; cocoa and brown sugar are also out and about. I'm going to let this warm up a bit and get back in there.

The taste is pretty bitter from start to finish. Not only from the hops, but it's seems the malts are more akin to bitter baking cocoa. It's a very tasty and filling beer, Pretty rich body. Everything softens just a touch as you go on.

What else could you expect from a Lag Brown Ale?

From their site = "A big Ol' Imperial Brown Ale to help you with your slipperly slide on into springtime. Rich, smooth, dangerous & chocolatey."

1 - Way to hoppy compared to other brown ales that I have tasted (and this was just after trying Mighty Arrow!)

2 - Rich - sure, smooth - not really, dangerous - eh, chocolatley - if you can find that through all those hops.

I had finally found some Mighty Arrow and that was all hops and not so bad. This was just not what I expected after tasting other brown ales. I need to find out which hops they used and avoid anything using the same hops in the same quantity.

Drinkable - not really, would I spend any more money on it - no.

A - Clear mahogany color with ruby highlight. Nice head on pour that fades pretty quickly becoming a lacing on top.

S - Caramel malts, malt sweet, with a good balance of aromatic citrus hops.

T - Very malt forward, lots of caramel malt with some roasted notes. The hops are definitely present but with all the malt they are in the passenger seat and not driving this brew.

M - Almost a creamy feel with a bit of a alcohol bite.

D - Very enjoyable, not too overwhelming and can be enjoyed in greater quantities than most American Strongs.

Poured this into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

A: It poured a deep amber almost a mahogany color, with a rather dark tan head that left great lacing down the glass.

S: Very malty aroma with a slight hint of hop but mostly dark chocolaty malts.

T: It had a very rich chocolaty, malty, and nutty flavor. With nice earthy hoppy flavor to bring up the tall end.

M: A medium bodied beer with a good bit of carbonation that slides through the mouth quite easily

O: This was a pretty good easy drinking beer I enjoyed it but will not be rushing to the beer store to buy the rest of them on the shelf

This beer was a dark brown color with a rather small tan head.

The aroma was sweet caramel and dark fruit.

It had a caramel and brown sugar taste. Also some raisin and a sweeter fruit.

This was a medium-bodied, malt-forward beer.

Good beer, would buy this again.

beautiful deep reddish brown, short creamy beige head that lingered and laced nicely. Nicely balanced aroma, complex bouquet of hops and sweet malt. Could definitely pick this out of a lineup as a lagunitas beer. It's by no means light, but it is lighter than I expected given the color and abv. WTF a limited release, and I plan do my part in consuming this batch's inventory.

22 oz bottle. Pours ruby brown with a big creamy off-white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is piney resiny hops with some fruit and roasted malts.

The flavor is roasted chocolate/caramel malts with some fruit and a good sized piney, resiny hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a solid hoppy brown.
