Poured into a pint glass. I have no desire to interpret their ridiculous date code. Seriously Lagunitas...

Look: Very good looking brew. A nice golden brown, with a two finger head. Very frothy with a slightly vigorous pour. The lacing was brilliant. It coated the entire glass by the end.

Smell: Very grassy/floral like. Like fresh cut wheat. Not to be outdone, on the opposite end is a fistful of citrus. With grapefruit taking the forefront.

Taste: I really liked the balance of citrus/wheat. To me, it was almost like a wheat ipa. Maybe it's the yeast change that is doing this, but it's a pretty solid balance, with the malty finish, it's very top-notch.

Feel: Medium-light. The carbonation is very present, and makes it very refreshing considering how wheaty it is. The 8.8% abv is almost invisible. Covered up nicely.

Overall: A great beer. I wish I had a couple more of the same style to really compare, because this one is so good. I might adjust the scores when I have a bit more of this style under my belt, but a slightly different take on a style I'm getting pretty use to. (IPA) so that makes it a very refreshing change-up.

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

A: Pours a golden color. The head has the typical frothiness of a Belgian-style beer, but perhaps isn't as towering, at only a finger high. Head color is eggshell. Spotty patches of lacing are left down the glass.

S: Pleasantly spicy, with the sweet hops typical of Lagunitas. There's also a decent black pepper note which serves to balance the former out. Buried beneath those two is a faint malt backbone. This really smells like it will be good.

T: Upon hitting the palate, it tastes exactly like LSS - imagine that. It starts with a combination of wheat malt and sweet-yet-piny hoppiness. But that finish is where it really takes off. The spiciness on the back end gives this a passing resemblance to a good tripel, albeit one that's well hopped. Basically, it's delicious throughout.

M: One gripe, it's a bit too heavy. Because of that and carbonation that's only 'medium', the sweetness isn't fully cleansed off of the finish quite as much as I'd like. Still, that's not a problem in the least. There's no hint of the 8.8% anywhere; this feels like it's about 5%.

O: Lagunitas is just like Motorhead - they tend to always taste/sound the same from beer to beer/album to album, but when that taste/sound is so damn good, it really doesn't matter. Yes, this is just another hoppy Lagunitas beer. And I don't care, because this is really damn good.

12 oz. bottle purchased at Whole Foods on P St. NW D.C., unknown bottling date, poured into my FFF Teku glass, drank 9/20/13 over a half-hour.

A: 3/3 - deep orange-golden coloration, solid clarity (can see and read through), initial soapy white head dissipates into subtle glass lacing, small alcohol legs for 8.80% time alcohol legs!

S: 11/12 - lots of intense Belgian flavors - spice, spice, esters, spice, spice, bananas, spice, spice...wow!!!

T: 19/20 - on the anterior tongue, I pick up first on the spicy, floral hops with only mild bitterness tasting super fresh!, in the middle of the mouth, some of the Belgian qualities start to emerge, in particular the fruity esters; still, it finishes really dry with little aftertaste that invites the next sip and the next...unbelievable!

M: 4/5 - moderate bodied with hop oils coating the tongue, the alcohol is present but doesn't taste like 8.8% to me; impressively high carbonation

O: 9/10 - as can certainly be surmised from the above, this is an excellent Belgian IPA that, I think, has restored my faith in the potential of this style...it's an effervescent admixture of hop, spice and ester that is as close-to-perfectly balanced as I can imagine, finishes super dry and just leaves you wanting more; highly recommended with any spicy dish but Indian or Cajun immediately pop to mind

TOTAL = 46/50

Bottle from Harvest Market
Pours a fairly clear light golden color with a huge fluffy bone white head that persists forever. Smells of lemon and spice with a bit of pepper, grass, hay, and earth. Light bready wheat malt pulls it altogether. The flavor is quite resinous with grass hay citrus and pine. Light pepper and yeasty phenols with a hint of light sugar. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick resinous almost chalky mouthfeel. Meh. too many contrasting flavors for my palette. The yeasty phenols and the resinous hop treatment are left unchecked by too light of a malty base. This didn't work for me.

I have had the Little Sumpin several times so I was waiting to see what this little extra WILD thing did. For me, it do not do what I was hoping for. It still was a good brew, a nice amount of hops, the nice was malty/citrus was was very special. The first taste, it had a good amount of hops, but as I was drinking it, the malt start coming through loud and clear. Enjoyable, but not exactly what I was hoping for.
