I always look forward to new Lagunitas offerings to get my hands on.Poured into a becker a brilliant copper/bronze with a fluffy white one finger head atop that took its time settling.Fresh malty aromas of bread ans lightly sweet caramel, fresh herbal tones underneath.Again fresh is a good word to us for the flavors, slightly crisp bread and caramel tones with slight nuttininess,of course hops are gonna play a part from these guys lending a gentle herbal finish. If I was from northeast Germany I might have a heart attack over this beer, but Iam not and I think its a great new world "big" alt beer.

Had this on tap as a guest beer @ Willimantic Brewery.

Appearance is orange in color with a small head....and nice lacing.

Smells very aromatic!....like aroma hops of some sort maybe coming from the yeast. hides the alcohol very well.

Taste is very clean and drinkable...comes out very ale like!. Has sort of an orange or tangerine taste.

Feel is great as well good mixture between dry and creamy.

Overall this beer is enjoyable....they should make this one again

A - Light amber, one finger head, fades very rapidly, low carbonation.

S - Citrus hops with some resinous pine, not overpowering, followed by some sweet caramel malt following.

T - Hops start the show, a good bit of citrus to start and then the sweet caramel malt keeps the hops from becoming overpowering. The resinous pine then follows through to the end, always kept it check by a good bit of malt sweetness.

M - This one feels like there is a good bit of sugar left over, finishes with a bit of a viscous finish. A touch more alcohol or carbonation would be welcome for a cleaner finish.

O - A restrained strong ale, good in all aspects but not a stand out. Enjoyable but lacks some character.

Always happy to try a new one from Lagunitis. My growler was filled at the Green Growler Grocery in Croton on Hudson, NY.

Nice looking brew, clear, typical almond amber, early puffy off white head, then a fine bubble film and leaves nice webs and extensive fine sheets of lacing.

Fruity hop nose with malt sweetness in the rear.

Super flavorful and enjoyable ale, notes of melons, lime, honey, ginger, gin and fruity, hoppy goodness. Packing serious flavor and at almost 9% this is a heady brew, but I'm tasting no alcohol.

Well done and well worth a try. Seek out if this should become available in your general area.

Single bottle from Consumer Beverages in Orchard Park, NY. No sign of a freshness date.

Poured into a Duvel goblet. Copper-amber in colour, nice crown of foam, with some great retention and flecks of lacing.

Nose is quite lovely – good citrus notes, sweet malt, tropical fruit, caramel, nice citric hop bitterness.

Very tasty, fits somewhere in the midst of an American Barleywine, strong ale and DIPA. Sweet sugary malt, caramel and milk chocolate is kept in check with tropical fruit (orange, pineapple, mango) and citrus bitterness. Not a hint of booze to be found, very easy to drink. Wonderful mouthfeel – carbonation is just present enough to cleanse the palate, nice and creamy.

Wonderful brew, well worth a pickup. Good mix of style elements, wonderful to drink.

Please change to American Strong Ale! Already requested several days ago, and it hasn't happened. Despite the name, it baffles me that someone entered this as an Altbier. ".alt" just means a different version of Lucky 13.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. Bottled on Julian date of 144 (May 24, 2011).

Appearance: Clear gold with thin white head. Some nice lacing rings.

Smell: Grapefruit, orange and tropical fruits. More sweet and tart than dry. More than anything, it just smells like Lagunitas.

Taste: Sweet and lightly tart blend of grapefruit, orange, mango and pineapple. The malts are toasty, but fairly minimal. Some light pine, spiciness and bitterness on the finish. Tastes a little too much like Maximus.

Feel: Moderately high carbonation, medium to full body that is fairly sticky. Finish is just barely dry.

Overall: As I said, way too similar to Maximus. In all honesty, all of the hoppy Lagunitas beers are somewhat similar for me, but this goes too far. Plus, Maximus is not my favorite DIPA by any means. Ultimately, I still do enjoy it, as I like the signature Lagunitas taste, but I prefer it be better balanced within the beer.

Bottle (2011)

Clear golden and auburn with a big, thick, and persistent off-white head. Lots of sticky spiderweb lacing down the glass.

A very sweet aroma consisting of orange and pineapple citrus, along with bready, caramel, and toffee sweetness.

Very sweet and syrupy. Citrus hops and lots of caramel and toffee sweetness, though the sweetness has a stinging, syrupy bite to it. Low bitterness.

Medium bodied and ample carbonation, though a bit syrupy and heavy.

A decent and inexpensive strong ale, but this ale seems remarkably similar to their Maximus DIPA, which is not one of my favorites.

For what it's worth, I remember enjoying this on tap a lot more than this bottled version.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness Chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep and clear copper orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About three fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves some nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Quite hoppy with a solid malt presence. Lots of tropical citrus hops with hints of grapefruit, mango, orange, pineapple, apricot, and lemon. Also a light whiff of earthy, spicy hops. Solid hints of bready malts with good hints of biscuit and caramel. This is very forward with the citrus fruits.

Taste: Like the smell, a big and bold taste of citrus fruits along with a solid bready malt backing. Bitter and ripe citrus hops upfront with notes of grapefruit, mango, pineapple, orange, apricot, and lemon. Light taste of earthy hops. Citrus is dominate here. Good bready malt taste with some biscuit and caramel. Pretty juicy and good.

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy feeling body with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy, juicy, and very smooth. Finishes fairly dry. Alcohol is hidden pretty well.

Overall: Another very solid brew from Lagunitas. Very good citrus hop taste.
