I've loved Lagunitas beers since I tried their first. Most of their beers are hoppy and quite delicious. They do something to their hops to make them orgasmic. When I saw that they made a weissbier I was very intrigued. It doesn't seem to be what Lagunitas is used to making but if they're going to be trying out new beers then I'm all for that.
I poured this into my .5L Spaten stange glass. It's head grew very tall and extremely bubbly. The bubbles were very small and the head fizzes away very quickly. Color of the head is off-white, a bit tannish. The beer itself can best be described as a murky copper color. Looks damn tasty!
I like this smell. Wheaty, citrusy sweet, and a bit boozy. It's as if someone baked an orange wheat bread. I very much get a cereal grain smell too that makes it have a certain mealiness to it. Strong smell.
The dominant flavors include wheat/grain and strong orange-ish (reviewing beers always creates new words). Along with the orange citrus flavor I also pick up sweet banana and white grape. There's a tart acidity as well. There's a bitterness there as well but I wouldn't say it's "hoppy". Alcohol lingers thought the finish. A good amount of flavor here and a decent taste.
This is a medium-bodied wheat beer with medium carbonation that adds some bite though overall it's has a creaminess.
I appreciate this "different" beer from Lagunitas. It's not a great weissbier but I definitely enjoyed it. It's also not usual for a 9% ABV weissbier. Me like!

From my tasting notes: The Lagunitas version was a much lighter cloudy orange color. There were lots of bananas and cloves in the aroma and my first taste was amazing. I really love this style. Despite the light color the taste was very full and heavy on the caramel malt, banana, and wheat with lots of complexity that hid its high alcohol content well. I thought this was a fantastic beer and Lagunitas treated the style with respect.
