Poured into my Schneider&Brooklyner Hopfen-Weisse glass a hazed deep orange infused golden with a thinner than expected white head that did hold well,I was expecting more of a large bloomer.Hefty sweetness, green apple, and spiced bananas in the nose, its quite boozy I gotta say.Sweet with a big shot of clove-spice on the palate, the alcohol is large but it doesnt over power, there is a decent drying note in the finish. It's a robust weizenbock,a little on the hot and sweet side at first, above average but not great.

Appearance – This is cloudy of course, a dull orange in color, with a modest head that showed little retention.

Smell – The sharp banana and weizeny yeast are strong at the smell and the light malt aroma makes this one true to its name.

Taste – This fell apart at the taste. It’s not a bad beer, but the banana came across as cheap and the yeast, while tasty, failed to carry longer than half a millisecond. The bock portion of this beer was burnt and harsh.

Mouthfeel – This is medium-bodied and lacked the fluffy mouthfeel required of the style and the excessive bitterness was completely out of place.

Drinkability – I actually didn’t mind drinking this one it just didn’t live up to the billing. Since there’s really no such thing as a double weizen I tried to use my imagination. It certainly didn’t pull off the official Weizenbock designation on BA and struggled to justify making a double version of a dunkel weizen.

Comments – The brewery said that they had a German brewer create the beer then send it over to the US then they mimicked it and made it in the “Lagunitas style” but I find it hard to believe that any German brewer invision this.

I was definitely excited to see this brew at my local beer store and the under six dollar price tag was pretty hard to resist.

A - Poured this beer into a Weizen glass. The beer pours a beautiful translucent honey color with a minimal white, creamy head. Great lacing throughout. It definitely has that signature wheat cloudiness which I have come to enjoy.

S - Spice, spice and more spice. The spices definitely dominate the aroma, followed by banana and the sweetness from the malts. While all the other breweries are busy releasing Oktoberfest's, the aroma from this beer definitely makes sense for this time of the year.

T - The taste is on par with the nose. Tons of spice, banana and sweetness from the malts. The taste is nothing that will blow you away but it is still pretty delicious. It is definitely fun to drink and a great change of pace if you are looking forward to enjoying a seasonal that is not an Oktoberfest. The spicy characteristics work so well with the cooling weather.

M - The crisp and light-body of the beer really help to accentuate the spicy characteristics and also help lend the beer a very easy drinkability. At 9% by volume this could be potentially dangerous but hell...it makes it all the more fun.

O - This is not one of my favorite styles but I was looking for something different and this is definitely something I enjoyed drinking. The spices and banana like qualities was delightful. I highly suggest trying this beer if you are looking for a good seasonal that is not one of the the thousand Oktoberfest's currently on the shelves. The spice like quality of this beer make it perfect for the changing seasons. Pick it up, kick your feet back, and enjoy. Just don't expect to be completely blown away by a complex/unique take on the style.

A - Pours a hazy orange/brown with maybe one finger of head. Head has decent retention and leaves a small amount of lacing.

S - Smells a bit like sweet banana bread with a bit of alcohol thrown in. Also a faint bit of spice. Pretty nice, but a bit of a heavy aroma.

T - Sweet bread malt with a lot of banana ad a bit of spice. A bit sweeter than I would like. It does begin to dry out with more spice, mostly pepper and clove, near the finish, but still quite sweet.

M - Slightly slick, medium mouthfeel. Some earthy dry bitterness on the finish.

O - Pretty good, but a bit too heavy and sweet. There are others in the style that I like quite a bit better, but this certainly isn't a bad beer.

I was fortunate enough to stumble on this beer on draft at the Bulls Head in Lititz today. A lot of BAs have recently listed them in the top lager echelon although the Pils was the only exampler generally available in PA. The DW is an excellent beer in the aggregate; some might even consider it restrained in flavor and general presentation. Refreshingly, an amped style didn't accentuate the supporting flavors along with the basic malt/hops effects. I APPRECIATE brewers' abilities to pack ABV into a balanced flavorful product without wresting the drinker into submission. The general smoothness and drinkability (mea culpa)of this item is a real achievement. I wish more of their lagers were available out here.

Usual Lagunitas reasonable pricing as this quality 22 ounce bomber was under $5.

Pours heavily clouded orangy amber, minor light tan head, leaves just a glimmer of a collar and next to no lace...alright no lace...

Fruity nose with some cloves, bananas and hints of yeast.

Warming, complex, and flavorful, with yummy yeasty phenolics more cloves, more bananas, honey, light lime, some mild hot sauce spice sensations on the gums. Nice night capper at 9%

The beer pours a hazy golden-orange color with a large white head. The aroma is very heavy on the bananas with some cloves and wheat also present. The flavor is similar with a few additions. The two predominant flavors are bananas and orange citrus, with some wheat and a little bit of cloves. There is also a low to medium amount of bitterness as well as some alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

First off, let me say that I love this style and I love this brewery. I may be willing to try this beer again and edit my review, but....

A- hazy, murky amber. NO head to speak of which was a big disappointment. Visible carbonation, but lack of head and murky color give off the illusion of flatness.

S- it smells great! Bananas, clove, maple syrup.

T- this is where I'm on the fence. I love the huge malt in this beer. It is almost cloying, but in a GOOD way. The banana and clove are HUGE, which is good and typical of what you would find in other weizenbocks like Vitus or Aventinus. The alcohol is very hot in this beer and this is its major flaw. Because it not only adds a harshness and an astringency to the taste, but it also makes the huge banana and clove flavors harder to deal with. I wanted to like this beer, but I found it hard to drink. That being said, there are some other little complex notes that I kept noticing. Spiced apple, peach, almond.

M- felt undercarbonated for this style. The carbonation was not a very noticeable component. I also, still, couldn't get past how hot it was and this sort of skewed my interpretation of the mouthfeel. That being said, this beer certainly lingered on your palate for some time

O- I was a bit disappointed. I wanted to like this beer, but I found it hard to drink. However, I may try it again and see what I think of it the second time.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Weizen glass.

Appearance: Cloudy but bright orange with billowing foamy white head.

Smell: Massive banana and bubblegum, with some clove, wheat and spicy noble hops.

Taste: Similar to the aroma, with loads of sweet banana and bubblegum, at least at first. Then the hops and clove come in and provide some great balance. Ends with lingering pepper and clove.

Feel: Creamy full body with moderate carbonation. Surprisingly dry finish after the initial sweet onslaught.

Overall: This is a great Weizenbock, and I seriously do not know what is wrong with the reviewers to date. I usually do not like it when Lagunitas steps away from their hoppy comfort zone, but this is incredible.

A-Cloudy, dirty light brown with white head

S-Banana esters, cloves, wheat, hefe weizen for sure

T-Banana bread! Yeasty, malty and heavy. Nice flavor

M-Pretty full bodied. Heavily carbonated, a little alcohol end note but never would have figured this beer was this strong. Well done!

D-A little heavy, but is definitely a souped up Hefe.

O-Nice flavor, strong wheat taste, heavy on yeast and malts. A really good beer, a good beer to start the night with.

Bottle (2011)

Texas Liquor
Carlsbad, CA

Cloudy, dark orange, nearly brown, with a thick, tight, off-white head that eventually leaves messy lines of lace down the glass.

A big aroma consisting of mashed up bananas, a tiny bit of clove, wheat, and a bit of bright citrus.

A more sweet and sugary example of the style, or at least compared to others I've sampled before. The banana and clove flavor is present, but there also seems to be a lot of caramel and sticky toffee, candied oranges, and a big wallop of wheat. Big and flavorful, though a bit too sweet.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.

An above average example of the style, but this doesn't rank as one of my favorite offerings from Lagunitas.

Poured into a pint glass from a 1 pint 6 oz bottle

A - nice one finger head, color clear orange gold.
S - Big wheat flavor initially, followed by citrus and coriander tones.
T - As smell indicates, also with overwhelming sweetness. Too many banana esters throughout.
M - Nice light mouthfeel with medium body and light carbonation
O - Overall too sweet for me, I used to like the heavy bananas in a hefe, but this was just too much.

22 ounce bottle insanely priced, meaning about five bucks or a little under. I poured this one into a Weihenstephaner glass and it looks great dead sexy wheat beer. My beer mirrors the image set on the label behind the wording it looks appetizing and beautiful at the same time. Deep orange copper body heavily clouded yeast suspsension well refined, with a big cloudy head forming thick and rising above the rim of my tall hefeweizen glass. The long lasting head sits well above the glass and slowly dwindles leaving even bands of lacing as the head fades away. Head smells rich of banana and residual sugars it's actually pretty amazing alcohol combinations causing banana bread combinations. Mild nuttiness and a bit of booze alcohol in the finish with each smell. Flavor wise it's stronger than expected...very german in nature but again the booze qualities take away from the overall drinkability...at 9% it's extreme sweetness and alcohol booze flavor also detract from it's likeable components overall. Hey, who I'm I to judge that this isn't to style or the right alcohol it's a great beer brewed on a German Rolec system. Okay more banana/glazed sugars think bananas foster lit on fire with some brandy then soaked in sweet malt sugars then bottled it's a bit hot in nature...but again I'm enjoying this...Overall go get some before this hulking hefeweizen is all gone.
