This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feared BrownShugga’ Ale. You see we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting the January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS and such every 3 hours. A couple of months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga’ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed. For every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our favorite daily beers. It’s a drag. This year, we brewed something that we think is also cool and brews more like our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure this kind of failure never happens again. It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga’ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing this up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our own sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it to be all over...
So this substitute beer is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.85% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.

Poured from a bottle into a goblet, clarified light amber with light effervescence and a pretty much perfect billowy white head. I get a dank, floral whiff from about two feet away. Closer inspection after it cools off a bit is super-mango and tangerine - nice. There's still that sweet dankness and some grain to it, but it's pretty much overtaken by tropical fruit and citrus. The flavor is heavy grapefruit, but only a light bitterness on the back end. It's really just lightly sweet and juicy, but still leans toward a hop-forward IPA - the malt side being really downplayed, and to no detriment to it.

Overall, this is an awesome beer that is $10 and available in a six pack. I dig it.

A: Light yellow, heavy carbonation. Almost looks like sparkling apple juice.

S: Mango, citrus, light resiny ending.

T: Upfront tropical fruits, mango and papaya. Then comes citrus and the dominating grapefruit at the end that lingers on the palate for almost a minute.

M: Light-bodied; Nice bitterness that hides the ABV

O: Delicious DIPA. I can't believe this this is a substitute for a beer that I actually think is one of the worst Lagunitas beers out there. I hope they ditch the Brown Shugga and just brew more Sucks!

Poured into a sam adams custom glass: color is straw, transparent, big, bright white head with some lacing - very nice, decent carbonation.

Smell is a huge hop punch, big pine, lighter grass and subtle citrus, light sweetness noted, maybe some toast.

Taste is again huge on hops, maybe more floral and grassy, but pine still plays huge role, again some subtle citrus like lemon. Malt is clean, no off flavors or over sweet, cloying flavors, pretty much clean pale malt and maybe toast, super simple but great.

Mouthfeel is also well done, great presence starting on the tongue, good carbonation and great bitter/sweet interplay quickly overtaken by the sucking dry hops, but thats what you want from this beer.

Overall, very impressive, very huge hop presence and clean malt taste make for a great dipa.

Poured from bottle

A - mostly clear, golden color. Nice thick, white head of foam. Moderate amount of lacing as the head dissipates

S - massive aromas of pine and tropical fruit. Sweet and bitter. Strong bottom notes of hops

T - aggressive front taste of bitter hops, followed by a smooth citrus and pine hop flavor mingling with sweet malt. Surprisingly cleaner and crisp finish with only mild bitter aftertaste of hop oil

M - slightly less carbonated than your average IPA. Medium bodies. Nice finish with mild lingering hop oil coating the tongue

O - a nice IPA, especially considering how widely it's distro is. Enjoyable as either a session beer or something to linger over

This brew pours a clear straw color which you can see clear through. There is a light 1/2 finger head which is a foamy white color. Moderate lacing on the glass and lots of carbonation.

The smell is strong with pine, melon, grapefruit, tobacco and sweet malts.

The taste follows the nose with each hop taste hitting the palate in succession with the sweet malt backbone ever present. Lagunitas did a great job of blending everything together.

The mouthfeel is smooth and tangy. There is some piney hop residue left on the tongue after swallowing.

Overall this is another winner from Lagunitas. This is a DIPA which is almost sessionable. All of the tastes and smells blend together well. Try it.

Pours bright golden with a rich creamy head. Lacing sticks.

Wonderful hop aroma! Citrus - including grapefruit, pineapple, mango - with pine and spicy pepper.

The taste is of juicy, bitter hops - citric/tropical and some pine blending together well. Enough sweet malt backbone to support the hops. It has a boozy, warming finish. Hop taste hangs on through a long finish.

Incredibly chewy and smooth! Dangerously drinkable.

A great example of a hoppy DIPA! Very enjoyable!

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Yellowy, see-through, little head, BUBBLY! The smell hits you big time from opening the bottle, bright, floral, hoppy, enticing. Best smelling beer I've had. Tastes hop-heavy, pleasant bitter, CLEAN, floral, citrus-y, maybe even ginger. Beautiful. Nice and bubbly on the tongue too. One of my favorites.

T: A lot like the smell with a bit more grapefruit and citrus coming through but still a distinct pine.
M: Very smooth and fulfilling
O: Very good beer. Lots of good hops flavor and very drinkable.
