12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint
4.65% ABV, 54.2 IBUs, number code on neck.
A - Shimmering pale straw yellow in color, a tall pour creates a frothy and billowing loose stark white head that slowly deflates onto the beer leaving chunky patches of suds on the pint. If it weren't for the aroma, this might look like a nicely poured adjunct lager!
S - Intensely hopped and dry hopped, the aroma of this beer is explosive and assaulting; sticky resin hop pellets and powerful hop tea give it a very "green" feel with abundant tropical fruitiness. Freshly sliced pineapple, mango, and guava quickly transfer focus from the "green-ness" elsewhere. Dry straw and grainy pale malt are all but overwhelmed; quite intoxicating indeed.
T - Decidedly dry hopped, the flavor backs off considerably allowing much more of the pale malt base to show through with it's grain and straw nuances. This still doesn't distract from the "green" hop tea flavor though, and tropical fruit aromas are traded for lemon rind citrus and earthy pine notes.
M - Light-bodied, this IPA is moderately carbonated but still produces a crisp feel due in part to the citrus hops which tickle the tongue and the dry finish. DayTime touts a 50+ IBU level but it surprisingly doesn't seem that high, especially considering this low level of malt interaction and balance.
O - DayTime is an exemplary name for this IPA; one that works well, characterizing the beer's low alcohol level, high drinkability, and and somewhat tea-like nature. As a hop head I enjoy it's hop character and drinkability but can't help wonder at what cost? On one hand I want a sessionable, higher IBU IPA but it feels just a touch empty after the explosive aroma. Regardless, a 6-pack of these wouldn't stand a snowball's chance on a hot summer day.
