Pours a light shade of that typical IPA color. Looks like a pale ale, which makes sense given that this beer -- intentionally so light in ABV% -- can't have the usual IPA level of malts.
The aroma on this beer is incredible, given what it is. It's not a 4.5 amongst all IPAs, truthfully. But it is a 4.5 when you consider that this is an IPA under 4.7% ABV. Given its stature, this beer's nose is full of pine and grapefruit pith and guava and orange juice. It's a big aroma, which means they had to have used lots of hops. But will all those hops dominate the lighter malt bill on the palate?
Answer: no. DayTime IPA is very balanced. It basically tastes like a pale ale. I've had pale ales with more assertive flavor profiles than this. But that's OK. It has more bitterness than any pale ale, which is key to this feeling like an IPA. Nice malt flavor. Quaffable stuff.
The mouthfeel doesn't draw attention to itself. It's light, because obviously. I favor thin mouthfeel in IPAs anyway, so I like this. Overall this does exactly what Lagunitas wants it to: this delivers a huge hop aroma and an IPA flavor profile at 3/4 the usual ABV% of the style. A success.
