The newest seasonal offering from the fine folks at Lagunitas is Day Time, a "fractional IPA." The brew pours a deep yellow, and it is capped by a fluffy, white head that provides some spotty lacing. Typical IPA aromas including citrus, pine, and floral notes swirl around lightly caramelized malt. Citrus hop flavors start this brew out before strong floral and grassy hop bitterness takes over. A light malt backbone helps to balance everything out before a finish that features citrus, pine resin, pepper, lemon grass, and sweet malt flavors. Lighter in both body and carbonation, this is one easy drinking IPA for day or night!

Cheers!

I bought a couple 12 oz. bottles of DayTime IPA, Lagunitas' "fractional IPA", on the advice of Craft Beer Cellar's Kate. 'Twas a good recommendation, for sure. DayTime was enjoyed at nighttime, in my trusty Dogfish Head snifter.

Appearance (4/5): DayTime has a light copper hue and is transparent. A vigorous pour down the middle produces a towering 3 to 3.5 finger head of white foam. It's quite impressive. The beer's active carbonation is apparent when holding it up to the light.

Smell (4.5/5): DayTime features seriously juicy aromas in the nose: tropical fruit–passion fruit, pineapple, and grapefruit. It's also a little dank and earthy. This is quite impressive stuff for a beer of 4.65% ABV. There is only a small difference in the aromatic intensity between this beer and a "normal" IPA. And while I have not sampled other "session" IPAs that have recently hit the market, I can't imagine that many smell as good as this offering from Lagunitas.

Taste (4/5): DayTime IPA is straight pink grapefruit hoppiness in the foretaste. It has a sweeter edge to it in the finish. The hops prickle and pucker, but at a lower level than perhaps Lagunitas Maximus or another stronger IPA would. The taste is mellower than the nose initially led me to believe. The flavor is noticeably less intense than a "normal" IPA, but that doesn't lessen the beer's quality, in my opinion. It is still very impressive how much flavor Lagunitas has been able to cram into such a low ABV beer.

Mouthfeel (4/5): Features a medium-light body, medium carbonation, and a nice, dry finish. DayTime has the quality I look for in IPAs big and small–a smooth, spritely, prickly mouthfeel without any syrupy viscosity. Well done on the feel. Doesn't feel as "light" as its ABV.

Overall (4/5): DayTime is a very good beer that's a great decision if you're looking for something easier going but still want your hop fix. While it doesn't produce the hop explosion that other higher ABV provide, it's the right beer for certain situations or Sunday afternoons. You'll be surprised how good a "session" IPA can taste. Way to go, Lagunitas. Highly recommended.

Poured into a pint glass from a growler at fridge temp.

Pours out a light golden yellowish color, good clarity. A nice big 2 fingers of white head, big soapy bubbles. Decent retention and lacing.

A nice big tropical fruity, hoppy aroma. Dank, pineapple, catty aromas. No real malt noticeable.

Follows the aroma with some nice dank, catty, tropical fruity hops. Pineapple, mango, and some sweet citrus. Just a little bit of a grainy malt barely noticeable, definatly a hop forward brew. Smooth bitterness in the finish.

Needless to say a light bodied beer and very easy drinking. I can see sessioning this all day on a hot summer day, or anytime really.

Overall, a very solid iPa. It lacks any kind of malt foundation, but that's to be expected with the low abv. It has some really nice hop flavors and aromas going on. I'll be sure to revisit and look forward to more low abv beers with big flavor.

A - Clear light yellow with a foamy white head. Fairly light for an IPA.

S - Hoppy and resiny with tropical fruits and green hops. The green hop aroma has been very dank and weed like when fresh. Light malt in background but is not needed when there is such a wonderful hop aroma.

T - Citrus sweetness followed by tropical fruits and grassy hops. Light malt character, maybe just enough to balance it out but the hops shine in this one.

M - Light and crisp. Very smooth.

D - This might be my favorite beer of 2012. I like the fairly low abv with a ton of hop flavor and aroma.

Poured into a taster at the Beer Kitchen in KC.

Pours a super light yellow/gold, almost hay like. Very clear, almost lager like. How strange for an IPA!

Smells is clearly of piney and citrusy hops, with a tiny hint of fresh roasted cracker malty goodness.

This beer is a great IPA starter for a new craft drinker. Very light on the palate, not super bitter, with great diversity in the hop flavor profile. Light on the stomach as well.

A- Clear pale straw colored body with a frothy bone-white head. Could easily be mistaken for a light beer.

S- Any sign of a light beer vanishes with the nose. Huge piney hop aromas with some citrus, sweet malt and a note of fresh grass. Very nice aroma.

T- Hops continue to come through in the taste, with pine being at the forefront. Malt comes though slightly on the back end with a bitter finish.

M- Medium-high carbonation with a light-medium body. Very refreshing and very drinkable.

O- Impressive IPA even without knowing the abv. The fact that this can be sessioned is an added bonus.

A: Pours a perfectly clear pale gold. Big fizzy white head. Fades at a moderate pace, leaving lots of bit fluffy tufts of lacing behind.

S: Really nice citrusy and tropical fruit hops. Get orange and pineapple mainly it seems. Malt seems to bring a bit of toasted bread. Wonderfully crisp and sharp aroma, especially for such a weak ABV brew.

T: Again, more citrus and tropical fruit up front, mildly sweet. Not a typical caramel malt in the middle, it's more of a toasted bread than anything. Biscuity, to be specific. Finish is more biscuit and some grassiness with touches of tropical fruits and citrus. Not overly bitter but there's definitely a nice bite to it.

M: Light bodied, simple.

O: A really nice sessionable IPA. Has a prominent hop bite up front but not overpowering. Crisp and tasty. Drinkable and smooth.

12oz bottle poured into an Imperial pint.

A - Straw golden and one shade short of brilliant. Moderate sized white head falls to a small cap after while. Left me with a couple small spots of lacing.

S - Strong pine edge to the hops. Background of fresh citrus hops. Faint little bit of graininess.

T - Any sign of malt is swallowed up quickly. Big hop flavors come through with some melon tones to them but also prickly pine. Moderate bitterness is smooth and bright. Hop flavor lasts for a short stint after finish.

M - Medium carbonation, medium to medium-light body, dry.

O - Very sessionable IPA. Light color is a nice twist. Every bit of smell a good American IPA has. Big on flavor lighter on bitterness. Very easy drinking and great for a hot summers day.
