Before getting into the review on this one I'd like to note that it's been aged (properly) for about a year. I'm aware that you're generally not supposed to age IPA's but I'm a fan of more malty IPA's and with the 6.2% abv on top of the fact they they claim this beer has "imperial malt qualities" I figured I'd give it a shot. So, here goes...
Pours a beautifully hazy, dense looking orange/yellow color. Not a whole lot of visible carbonation in the glass. Sort of reminds me of my girlfriend...looks delicious but definitely could have yielded a little more head.
The scent is mostly dominated by a wonderful caramel maltyness. After that I'm getting hints of citrusy hops and a tinge of alcohol.
Taste is similar to the smell in the sense that it is malt forward, which was expected and its definitely not a bad thing. A nice smooth caramel maltyness followed by a slightly bitter grapefruit hoppyness. Alcohol is well hidden. Delicious.
Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, especially for a westcoast IPA. Goes down VERY easily. Low carb level with a lighter side of medium body.
Overall, interesting enough, this beer aged pretty well. If you're into experimenting with your cellar I'd recommend throwing one or 2 of these down there for 6-12 months. This beer is also great fresh but it was a cool idea that didn't turn out to be a failure.
