12oz bottle from 2.21.05 enjoyed today, April 2, 2015, from a teku

A: Clear gold with a bit of ruby or garnet tones

S: Light notes of orange and lemon; some light sweetness

T: Pretty citrusy and bready, a little spicy and a little bitter, with a bit of orange rind on the finish.

M: Light- to medium-bodied with fairly active carb. Leaves a dry, bitter tingle on the finish

O: Solid IPA that's a great value at $8.99/sixer. Nothing spectacular, but it's tasty, bottle-dated, and inexpensive…and thus always a good option. (528 characters)

On tap, in a shaker pint glass, at McFaddan's in Las Vegas.

Appearance - Nice gold color. A nice head that never entirely disappears. Remarkable clarity. Mondo stickage. A very handsome beer.

Smell - Grapefruit. A little spicy. A little sweet.

Taste - Big hops. Slightly acidic. A touch of sweet malt in the finish. Good.

Mouth - Good carbonation. A bit oily. A bit thin.

Overall - Yet another California Hop Bomb, to be sure. The bitter and the sweet work well together. Nothing too original here but tasty all the same. (528 characters)

People seem to be getting a lot of citrus on the nose, but I don't get that. For me, the fruit notes are much rounder, sweeter...I think it reminds me of mango.

This is only partially misleading, because after the initial burst of grassy hops fades away, there's a nice, bready, biscuity aftertaste, like what you expect from a good witbier.

It's solid. I like it. (366 characters)

I have no clue as to whether the character changes completely whether it's brewed in CA or in IL as I assume I'm getting it living in PA (enough abbreviations for you?) but it's solid if not exemplary. (201 characters)

pretty standard IPA but it's common and reliable. Something I'll take at a bar that doesn't have a great selection without drinking an adjunct or random subpar IPA (163 characters)

L: Good three finger head that is ivory in color and foamy. Nice golden color, about a 6-10 on the SRM in the pale gold range.

S: Serious cool hops burst of citrus scent at first. As far as esters they are there too, I'd say banana. Breadiness too, but like the banana subtle for malt. The standard points out resinous smell and yeah, when I check the resin scent is def there.

T: Bold roasted flavor that for me was very pleasing. After notes of resin. Some floral
notes without a doubt and those were in the scent too. Some pine hints detectable but low key. As far as esters, stone fruit, peach maybe but very subtle.

F: The bod is medium tilting light. Effervescence is there but not a lot. It has a very smooth finish and goes down easily, IMO.

O: Overall I like this beer. This would go well with pub fare no doubt so order them nachos!!! (860 characters)

Golden amber like color.
Smelled a little citrusy with a pine aroma.
I could taste some hop presence along with some mild bitterness and citrus like notes.
Mild amount of carbonation.
This is a very nice IPA and for the price (about $16 for a 12 pack) it's a home run! (268 characters)

Absolute garbage, and so well distributed that it's always in your face. A generic northern california IPA that is in every bar and every convenience store, but is actually a watery worthless ale. I'm literally disappointed every time someone buys this. A bland, filler beer that you might drink just to get drunk and not seem like a cheapskate for drinking PBR. Avoid if you can. (384 characters)

Pours reddish golden clear liquid with white foam head with almost no retention. Smells fruity, citrusy, flowery, fresh. Tastes very balanced bitterness with malt sweetness. More hops in the after taste. Feels low body with low carbonation. Overall a good IPA. (260 characters)

A gloriously balanced, highly quaffable IPA. It is truly luxurious on the palate and one sip begets another. Also, its James McMurtry's favorite beer and he's one of the best musicians and songwriters, period. So you should drink it. (236 characters)

Poured from 22 oz bottle to glass. Moderate hoppy scent with the usual west coast IPA pine/grassy undercurrent aroma. Colour is amber/yellow with light head. Taste like a typical American IPA. Not bad at all, but not special either. Light Mouthfeel goes down smooth. For the price I would have expected a little more bitter flavour and a little higher ABV. But it's still not bad. (380 characters)

On draft at the Abbey in Providence RI. Nice color and nose, but underwhelming with the overall taste and flavor profile. Nothing wrong, but just average for me. Might also have been that I was expecting more. (209 characters)

For all the hype I found this very disappointing, not nearly as bitter as I was led to believe, way too balanced, kind of like a middle of the road Democrat or centrist Republican -- neither here nor there. (208 characters)

Tried in a pint glass poured from a bottle.

Looks a bit light relative to the IPAs I'm used to in the PNW. It's well filtered, a light-to-mid yellow-orange with good carbonation. The head is a little high, maybe 6mm with a moderate pour -- off-white, ivory. Very lacey. Though it's lightly colored it's a nice looking beer.

The smell is also light for an IPA relative to what I'm used to. It's a bit floral and skunky with only a little bit of pine. Pleasant but not really outstanding or interesting.

The taste has some mild bitterness and the skunk in the smell comes through again. There isn't a lot of the complexity or interesting hop character that I've found in really great IPAs. The finish is 'flat' and a little bitter. Carbonation is a little high and overall body is just a little thin.

This isn't a bad beer but I don't see why I'd choose it over the great IPA options that we get in the PNW unless it was a really great deal and I needed a budget option, but it actually tends to be a little on the costly side. (1,037 characters)

Appearance: This beer has a clear dark golden color with a small-medium head. The head is composed of thick bubbles instead of the tiny ones that you see in a finer head. These larger constituent bubbles make for a nice texture and each bubble pops with a hint of the aroma which I’ll talk about next.

Smell: The smell is very nice, but is not very strong. I can pick up on the malty front and the mild hops at the back, but other than this you should rely on the taste to enjoy this beer.

Taste: The taste is great. If you don’t want a powerful IPA like a Double or Extra IPA for those lazy weekdays, then this is the beer for you. I personal enjoy this beer as is, but I wouldn’t mind a higher IBU or ABV content. The malts hit first with a nice toasty flavor and gives way to a delayed citrus laced hop.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is nice. It has enough carbonation to dance with the mild alcohol content and there is a lingering resin-like coating on the tongue after a sip. This has a smooth feel to it also.

Overall: I would say this is a great beer by Lagunitas, but not as awesome as their Lil’ Sumpin’ Sumpin’ variety. This Lagunitas IPA is a nice go-to beer if you can’t find anything stronger or more robust. I found the only negative thing about this beer to be a lack of complexity. I usually look for a well-timed release of a variety of flavors each as strong as the last, but this one is sort of monotonic. Not bad, but just not excellent. (1,473 characters)

This is almost what I would call a "light" IPA. The flavor is there but it seems like you have to work to get at it. The color is a very light orange, almost like a Pilsner. The smell has a light citrus note with a little warm bread in there. The flavor is mild and fleeting although still fairly good. Easy to drink. It's not very complex though which for this style might be an issue. I dunno. There are better IPAs out there for sure but this one would work for a person that wants a very light IPA. I wouldn't buy it again. (536 characters)

I had it on tap. As someone stated earlier, it's a bit more watery for ipa's I'm used to. The color is a little lighter than most ipa's. I would pass on this if most other ipa's are available on tap. Not the biggest fan (219 characters)

Orange body. Orange like hop aroma. Has that signature Lagunitas scent. Hop forward taste, a bit watery, almost like a pale ale. Not that bitter. Again, a slightly watery feel, not the best. Overall, I'd be happy to see this on tap, but wouldn't go out of my way for it. (271 characters)

This is a fantastic "starter" IPA. Incredibly drinkable, I can't imagine anyone not liking this beer. Everything in balance, not sharp or bitter at all, and not overly citrusy. If you have a friend who is new to craft beers, serve him this beer. (246 characters)

355ml bottle poured into a chalice glass

Look: Dark honey yellow with a bubbly, slightly off-white head. Considerable retention and significant lacing.

Smell: The hops hit you pretty much the moment the cap comes off the bottle - there's the whole gamut of smells here: pine resin, floral aromas, cut grass and a big heaping helping of citrus (grapefruit and orange predominate) and a side-order of pineapple. Malt? Not much that I could determine.

Taste: Oddly enough, this is pretty hop-forward although there's a massive range of flavours vying for attention here - fairly floral and grassy to begin with, with the citrus and tropical fruit flavours following hot on their heels. Spicy flavours and hop bitterness to finish. There's a hell of a lot going on here.

Feel: Dry, bitter and slightly fizzy - not too heavy for something that's 6%+. The flavour profile is rather special.

Overall: In terms of UK availability, Lagunitas is one of the American breweries that is most likely to find some kind of representation outside of your typical craft-oriented bottle shop. If you're after a good, solid IPA then this would make a good go-to brew - perhaps not as 'homicidally hoppy' as the bottle blurb would have you believe, but definitely worth it for the sheer variety of the flavour palate. I look forward to trying more of the Lagunitas output. (1,356 characters)
