12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass at cellar temperature.
L – Pale amber color with a 2-finger cream-colored bubbly head. Pretty good retention and lacing. Clear with lots of bubbles.
S – Caramel malt with a nice bouquet of hop aromas with orange, grapefruit, pine, and lots of floral notes. Smells pretty good.
T – Starts off sweet with caramel malt and orange flavors and gradually builds to a bitter hop finish with mostly floral but also some grapefruit and pine notes. The hops are slightly more subdued than the nose suggests.
F – Medium-bodied with lots of carbonation, a sticky mouthfeel, and a dry and bitter finish. Hop bitterness lingers for a little bit.
O – This is a pretty good IPA. The biggest gripe that I have is that the hops seem held back a tad in the flavor. I know it’s not a DIPA so I shouldn’t expect a bitter hop flood, but I expected a little bit more from Lagunitas. Still a very tasty and drinkable beer.

Poured into an Allagash flute on 7/11/12
A fury of bubbles becomes a three finger slab of foam sitting atop a sun-crisped, faded orange/brown body; kind of reminds me of autumn leaves. The head dissipates slowly, leaving pepperings of lace at the top of the glass. Better lace farther down the glass.
The aroma has a wet pine and dry citric hop aroma; it definitely smells like something I'd expect from Lagunitas. Semi-sweet biscuit and hints of sugar cookie take care of the malt side.
An orange, grapefruit and lemon juiciness leads off, drying out with curt notes of pine in the middle and a moderate bitterness carrying the finish. Cracker-like malts flash out the overall flavor without detracting from the hops.
The feel is standard-fare medium for an IPA. Carbonation is fairly common; appropriately ample and a touch nippy. The finish has oily hop residuals.
Hmm... It's been a spell since I had one of these. It's better than I remember.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip. Aggressive pour yields a tight, soapy, irregular and off-white 3-finger head with really good retention and pretty lacing.
Ripe grapefruit and citrus rind hits the nose first with a touch of toasty maltiness, although the hops are dominant. Definite hop spiciness. Overall a very complex, sweet and citrusy nose.
Just an overall good balance. The hops hit you first with citrus, pine, rind, sweet grass and trademark norcal dank. The malt bill is definitely imperial-esque but not as heavy or a full. Lagunitas definitely puts the malt bill in the shadow of the hops.
Mouthfeel is fairly standard; full-bodied with a nice, dry finish.
I love this beer and always have. One of the first craft IPA's I've ever had and remains a staple in my beer diet. Favorite IPA? No, but definitely up there and I think it deserves the hype for it's full and revolutionary character.
