On tap at Papillon, NYC.

Poured a medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was very good retention and very good sticky lacing.

The smell featured a pepper hop with a slight citrus.

The taste consisted of an upfront white pepper and grapefruit that slowly faded into the round pale malt.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a tasty and quite enjoyable IPA. A nice example of the west coast style.

A- Pours a clear, pale gold color with a very small white head. Head becomes a layer of bubbles and leaves some very spotty lacing.

S- At first it seems like there is not a lot going on here. Fairly light here, a bit of tropical fruits, a touch of pine and a bit of caramel malt back bone.

T- Not bad by any means just a lot lighter than I like. A bit of citrus and touch of pine. Follows the nose well. A good balance of hops and malts just doesn't have the bite that I'm looking for.

M- Medium in both body and carbonation.

D- I want more from an IPA. I would consider this one a starter IPA. Its not terrible by any means I just think there are much better out there.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3 | overall: 3.5

appearance: pours a golden orange with faint cloudiness, moderate carbonation leaves little foam with slightly more lacing.

smell: moderately floral hoppy scent with slightly tangy/piney aroma.

taste: clean beginning which progresses into a hop sensation that has a piney, slightly bitter flavor towards the finish.

drinkability: medium-bodied, mellow and notable hop flavor, yet slightly underwhelming; definitely drinkable, but not overly impressive.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear light caramel brown with orange hues and a 2 finger foamy white head which lingers throughout. Very minimal lacing.

Smell: Pine, grapefruit and floral hops with just a hint of caramel. The smell is much lighter than expected and leaves something to be desired.

Taste: Pine is dominant up front followed by a sweet citrus in the middle then grapefruit and lemon rind at the finish. Aftertaste is a nice mix of hoppy bitterness and sweet citrus.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Feels a bit slick on the tongue due to the oily hops.

Drinkability: High drinkability. You could knock back a few of these without any trouble.

Overall: Solid IPA overall. Definitely not the best in the style but you could do worse.

Pours a hazy orangish gold with a small but stubbornly sticky white head that clings to the glass like ivy on brick. Aromas are remarkably subdued for an IPA, and are almost entirely citrusy, but very interesting. The taste is not jarring. Rather, the hops are bracing for only a split second up front before strong caramel malts rush in to put out the fire. Overall this very well balanced and easily drinkable all on its own.

Orange to light brown in color, rocky head. Smelled like a typical hoppy IPA but the taste kind of surprised me. I found it very sweet, a nice bright freshness, with a very restrained amount of hop bitterness. The hops are there, the pine/citrusy kind, but it's all-in-all pretty balanced (having tried the Hop Stoopid I was expecting something along those lines). I'd say this just squeaks into the IPA profile, a notch above a lot of APAs, but I liked it. Nice to see not all brewers trying to one-up others, this is actually pretty distinct but not over the top.

A-Pours a very clear orang/amber color with a glistening, two finger white head. Leaves beautiful lacing behind.

S-Pineapple with some light caramel malt notes and some pine.

T-Pineapple with some sweet caramel malt, a little mango, and drying pine on the finish.

M-Very smooth in the mouth, with medium body and low but prickly carbonation.

D-A very easy drinking IPA with enough going in the taste to keep you interested. I could see having this one around in the fridge often. Well done, Lagunitas!

On tap at People's Republik in Cambridge. Served in a standard pint glass. Dull orange color, like a deep sunset. Moderate sized head with some good lacing. Smell was hoppy. Taste, on the other hand, was full of hops but in very moderate amounts. I really liked the route that Lagunitas took with this IPA. Make it hoppy enough for hop heads to enjoy, but smooth enough for an average IPA drinker to like. The perfect amount of hops for a beer, in my opinion. Just enough of the hop bite on the palate to remind you that you're drinking an IPA. I actually found myself thinking that I could drink a few of these, which is a great feeling. I think that Lagunitas has made an IPA that I actually enjoyed drinking for the first time in a while. Great job here.

Enjoyed at Bossanova on 7/31/10.

A-Pours a rusty,amber/orange with almost two fingers of honorable,milky-white head with decent retention, moderate lacing and good carbonation.

S-Pink grapefruit,Tang(in a good way)and orange marmalade.Big citrus right away on the nose. Some floral notes and pine but mostly citric characteristics.

T-More sugared grapefruit, honeysuckle and tangerine.Lots of pleasant, hop bitterness with a small amount of malt to counter it.Probably would have benefited from the presence of slightly more malt.

M-A little lacking in body but overall it was good.Light to medium bodied with a crisp, slightly oily finish.

D-This is an extremely,sessionable beer.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

A- pours a clear shade of a yellow/orange with a one finger white head. Head sticks around FOREVER...10 minutes maybe? Insanity

S- not getting much of a nose...what I am getting is bitter grapefruit. Maybe a touch of pine. Underwhelming

T- slight sweetness from citrus hops, finish is a little bitter. Overall, its kinda mild...but nice.

M- good feel. Carbonated very well, and the insane head makes it a little creamier...goes down nice.

D- really drinkable. Flavors are balanced perfectly. Great drinking IPA

Appearance: Poured a bright, hazy, golden color with a small centimeter thick white head. Moderate amount of carbonation.

Smell: Bouquet of hops, grapefruit and other citrus aroma.

Taste: Hops up front, grapefruit notes, pine notes, and malty biscuit like notes in the background. For an IPA, really nice balance.

Mouthfeel: Rather thick, carbonation adds for some nice crispness and the beer lingers for a while on the palate after each sip.

Drinkability: Overall, well put together easy drinkable IPA, I would buy this beer again, it represents the style very well.

Served in a pint glass. There was a lot of sediment, which I left in the bottle. After that it poured clear. Despite a vigorous pour the head was thin, but left lacy of lacy rings.

Aroma is hoppy, sweet, and citrusy, not overly strong, no malt present. The hop flavor is grapefruit, citrus and pine. Malt character is there but mild. Mouthfeel and carbonation seem appropriate. Bitterness does not linger. Overall this is a very nice

Glass - Pint

A - A nice clear golden/yellow color with lots of carbonation. It produced a 2-finger head that held okay but not great. It left a splotch & a splash on the glass, and a nice ring atop my beer held up very nicely.

S - Flowery with notes of pine & grapefruit. It's got some soft grainy notes, a touch of toast, mildly sweet. Simple aroma here.

T - Pine & grapefruit rind flavors battle it out with bready, grainy malts, ultimately the pine/grapefruit hop flavors win & start to become one noted. There's a nice lemon citrus towards the finish that cuts through the grainy malt flavors, and it finishes with mild linger rind flavors & a nice bitterness that's on the mild side.

M - Smooth with a medium-full body. Soft crispness.

D - More of a drinkable IPA that reminds me of a Pale Ale really, just a touch more bitter. Not bad but for what it offers I might just go with a pale Ale instead. Worth a try but I wouldn't continue to buy it. It really needed more malt to balance it out.

glass: Pint

a: Light orange, slightly murky body. Soapy 1-2 finger head.

s: Fresh pine, orange and lemon rind scent. Just a touch of caramel malt underneath the fruity hops.

t: Nice lemon and grapefruit rind up front. Soft orange in the middle. More rind and some caramel malt finish it off. Lingering bitterness is just right.

m: Light to medium body, moderate CO2, a little dry in the back-end.

d: Very easy going down, just the right amount of bitterness. Very session-able. Excellent drinkable IPA.

Pours a golden yellow color with an inch of head which is gone right away. Leaves a bit of lacing. The smell is citrus hops. I would know immediately that it's a west coast hops beer just from the smell. The taste is also big hops. Good, but LOTS of hops. Reminds me a lot of Sierra Nevada's IPA. Very similar smell and taste. Mouth is full. Very representative IPA overall. Good beer if you enjoy hops.

Poured into a Unibroue tulip.
This IPA pours a bright and clear straw/orange color with one finger of white head that recedes quickly and leaves some nice lacing on the glass.

The first thing to hit me of the aroma is juicy fruit and floral hops. There is grapefruit, a bit of pineapple and some apple. A hint of sweet malt is noticeable, but the beer is still cold. After it warms a bit some nice light caramel malt aromas surface as well as some other fruit, a hint of peaches and grapes.

Taste is sweet at first, with bright fruit flavors. This is quickly dominated by a hop bitterness that is bracing yet clean, not harsh at all. The finish is mellowing hop bitterness, a nice bready and grainy malt flavor and some juicy hop flavors. Lingering aftertaste is floral and fruity hops, bready malt and some lingering hop bitterness.

mouthfeel is medium with medium carbonation. It coats the mouth well.

Overall this IPA is bright and fresh tasting. I very much enjoyed drinking it and would like to have it again.

A- Clear golden/bright orange color, translucent. Less than half a finger of white head which disipates almost immediately.

S- The alcohol really comes out in the smell, along with a strong citrus-hops presence.

T- A mild spicyness hits first, followed by the hops. Intense hops presence. There is a hint of pumpkin, with a strong caramel finish from the malts. The hops linger, very bitter. Alcohol isn't well masked. Not a bad taste but not very well balanced.

M- a little on the watery side, could be fuller, in my opinion. Well carbonated.

D- Pretty drinkable for an IPA. Nothing outstanding.

Clear orange amber with tan frothy head and decent retention and lacing. Citrus and a touch of floral sweetness aromas. Taste mirrors the aroma with just a hint of malt sweetness. Bright, sharp, and refreshing carbonation.

A great drinking IPA. Great, although not complex hop flavor is given just enough malts to cling to without adding too much to the flavor so the hops can stand on their own. Smooth and refreshing, this is a great IPA you can easily drink several.

Lagunitas IPA, in a bottle, served in a pint glass.

Appearance- orange to red color, low to medium head and lace.

Smell-nose of hops, flowery citrus, alcohol and more alcohol, crystal malt.

Taste/Mouthfeel -hoppy rush, multilayered taste, harsh hop and alcohol combined burn, not that smooth, big hop aftertaste.

Drinkability - up to whether you like hops, basically, this is a big IPA.

Overall- decent IPA, nice taste, maybe a little harsh, could be brought into more balance. Not bad.

A - Pours a hazy honey color with a 1 inch white head that fades to nothing. Good ring lacing on this beer.

S - Smells of citrus zest, pine needles, and malt.

T - Bitter pine hops, acidic citrus zest, sweet malt finish. Very very tasty.

M - Perfect carbonation on this beer. Dry with a well done bitter/acidic coating in the mouth.

D - Superb. Easy drinking and super tasty makes for a great beer.

A: The pour is a burnt orange color with a finger's worth of slightly off-white head.

S: A decent hoppiness to the nose. Citrus and floral notes on top of a bready base with a bit of pine on the finish.

T: The flavor is not as intensely hoppy as you usually find in CA IPAs. A nice bitterness to it as well as citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit. The bread/malt base comes through quite a bit as well.

M: Nothing out of the ordinary here, medium in both body and carbonation.

D: A nice easy drinking IPA that's not over the top hoppy, but not too sweet or malty either.

I had this on tap at Lagunitas on 6/13/2010.

A: Deep golden with nice creamy foam.

S: Aromas of smoke, ester and fruit. Picked up some melon and apricot in there, and some fresh hop.

T: Very strong hop flavor, with excellent blend of fruits. At the end, a little surprise of alcohol afterburn.

M: Medium bodied, somewhat sharp and pungent with the combination of hop and alcohol.

D: Becoming one of my favorite American IPAs, this was a treat to have on tap at Lagunitas. Although it was great, it was not the best they had that day.

Poured into a pint glass.

Pours a clear yellowish orange, light amber color with an off white head. Head is chunky and settles nicely to a chunk island head . Has a decent lace. Looks good.

Brew smells of citrus hops, grains and some malts. Some floral notes as well.

Brew is well balanced and not too carbonated. Tastes the citrus hops, the biscuit malts, yeasts. Has a floral hop as well. Taste is somewhat sweet, only the slightest bitterness. Hops pepper the tongue slightly. Brew overall drinks easy and is refreshing.

This is a very drinkable brew and isn't too bitter. For an IPA this might be a little too soft when comparing it to some top IPA's (as far as hop bitterness goes). This is a very approachable brew, that drinks like a pale ale (very sessionable). A little light for an IPA, but I like it a lot. Good stuff.

Lagunitas IPA / 650 ml. / 5.7% ABV / 2010

Brewer: Lagunitas Brewing Company
Style: American IPA
Glass: Pint

Nice glowing amber with a great head and terrific lacing spattered against the glass. Too bad I've seen so many other IPAs with exactly the same description.

A faint medley of lemon, hops, pine, and grass. Refreshing, but not brilliant.

Bitter and hoppy with those same pine/grass notes in the background. The aftertaste is a little sticky, bitter and warming. Very solid taste.

Thicker than expected but in a good way. Great carbonation.

It all works together so nicely. Solid but not surprising.

Served in a Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Thanks to dzyneguru for this extra!

How is it that I've never had this before? Hm. It pours a clear orange-amber topped by a finger or so of white foam. The nose comprises hoppy florals and citrus and some light toffee in the back. The taste holds notes of these elements, along with a good amount of bitterness and a stepped-up but o' citrus. The body is light, with a moderately active carbonation and a crsp, dry finish. Overall a nice IPA...nothing special and nothing bad. Good times.
