Draft service into a snifter glass at Redwood Curtain Brewery in Arcata.
A: Slightly hazy, light amber color with one finger of off-white foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.
S: Heavy tropical fruit is over-ripe, with some accessory coniferous dankness. Bready malt is mild, semi-marginal. No alcohol is detectable.
T: Begins off-dry, with dank guava and mint hops aromatics. Tropical fruit ripens and spreads on the palate during the middle. Tangerine citrus fruit emerges late, with a moderately bitter finish for the style. No alcohol is detected.
M: Medium to thick viscosity, resinous and slightly syrupy on the palate, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: Intensity is the theme of this DIPA, tasting especially big for its actual size. The depth of hops flavors it is able to generate are impressive, with particular adherence to the Simcoe and even Nelson Sauvin profiles. Malt qualities are lacking here moreso than in Redwood Curtain's standard IPA, very true to West Coast style. In line with its excesses it proves to be fatiguing on the palate--even the 12 oz. serving at the tasting room seemed over-generous.
