Notes/Commercial Description:
Our black IPA is bursting with crisp, clean bitterness and layers of wonderful American hop character. Pale Ale, Munich and Naked Golden Oats give a toasty malt backbone with a smooth mouthfeel. The dark ominous color comes from the Chocolate Malt and the de-husked highly roasted malt. We want the layers of hops to shine against this roasty malt backdrop. Warrior, Citra, Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo lend bitterness as well as a wonderful cornucopia of aromas and flavors of fresh citrus fruit, pine, fresh cut mint and fresh flowers they offer.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours black with some subtle brown hues; fluffy off-white head that slowly fades leaving nice lacing and retention. The aromas are full of roasted chocolate along with some citrus notes. There's hints of orange and grapefruit. There's a fair amount of cocoa malts. It's a nice blend between chocolate and sweet fruits. The flavors seem to match the nose. More malts. Lots of dark chocolate giving it a solid bitterness. Some fresh pine needles are in the mix too. Lemon and lime is in the mix. More orange zest and grapefruit rind. Hints of smoke and some expresso, Earthy stuff. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's pretty smooth and easy to drink.

This is a pretty solid Black IPA. Maybe it's not a mind blower, but the craftsmanship is impressive. It basically has all of the characteristics that one would look for in the style. It's good.

APPEARANCE: The Jukebox-Hero looks black when it’s first poured, but when held up to the light it is clear that it is browner than black and it lets a fair amount of red light through. The head retention is decent, but it only begins at about a half a finger thick and settles into a cap that is wispy thin, but still covers the entire surface of the beer.

SMELL: At first it smells like an IPA, with citrus and grassy smells, but the mild roasty aromas creep in along with a slightly spicy characteristic.

TASTE: The roasty, coffee notes are much stronger in the flavor than they are in the nose, but the citrus and hop character still dominates. The impressive hop bill comes through strongest, however. Citrus, pine and grass are all big components of this complex flavor. A touch of dark chocolate plays on the edges while the finish is nice, hoppy and spicy.

MOUTHFEEL: The carbonation is not as big as the sparkle would suggest, but the coffee/dark chocolate/hop bitterness seems to be accentuating the sparkle as it cleanses the palate between sips. The body is somewhere between light and medium (although leaning towards medium) and it is a dry beer all the way through.

OVERALL: Pretty solid. Black IPAs can be tricky, but Rev, as usual, threads the needle nicely. It isn’t my favorite beer within the style, but it is one I’ll reach for again if it comes back.

Revolution Brewing Jukebox Hero, I'm into this one after the pour into my new IPA glass, I'm sold. Pours a dark almost pitch black with brown ruby highlights around the base of the glass, light cream khaki head forms thick and to the point fine lacing speckled evenly.

Aroma has dark green pine, citrus pith, crushed aspirin, earthiness blended with mild dark chocolate like an herbal mint chocolate Andes chocolate notes.

Flavor creamy dark chocolate, upfront bitter hops earthy piney floral notes a bit of citrus peel in the back end, I can tell this has a bit of age on it no dating on the bottle it must have rubbed off mysteriously. Super solid reasonably drinkable style of black IPA.

Mouthfeel is solid creamy textured slight hop oils, with even flowing carbonation going down. Medium bodied ale, smooth going down on the palate.

Overall, a very tasty option from Chicago, looks like something I would like to drink.

Bomber > Bow-tie pint

A - More of a dark brown than black, just shy of a full finger of khaki foamy head, thick lacing.
S - Aroma has some lighter roasted traits, toasted caramel and toffee, then a nice array of fruit, papaya, melon, peach, even a little banana.
T - Takes a step down in the flavor department, some burnt traits come through lightly then hang on to the end with some aggressive pine hop bite, sweet toasted caramel malt, orange juice, a little lemon zest.
M - Well carbonated and very balanced in feel, goes down easy too.
O - Really good black IPA, aroma has all the good stuff, flavor is good too, just doesnt match up the aroma as good as it should.

This one has a nice fruity tone with a minimal hop spiced edge. This is how I like my black ales: smooth and easy drinking, with just a hint of fruit and a non-abrasive degree of hop influence. Well balanced. I like it. Another good one from Revolution.
