Very dark brown that appears black in the glass. Just over one finger of head forms and sticks around for a long time before eventually settling to a thin cap. Light spotty lacing is left down the glass.

Dark malt aroma of chocolate, molasses, and graham crackers. Getting some fruity esters as well. No sign of alcohol. Getting a very slight hint of acidity.

Cannot make up my mind if this tastes more Belgian or British. There is a slight acidic bit in the finish that really confuses my palate. I get flavor notes of chocolate, coffee, and caramel from the malt. A lot of yeast esters and phenols as I pick up cherries, plums, and raisins. A touch of spice as well. Alcohol is not noticeable.

Starts off as a solid, robust porter. But the finish is really weak and thin. Feels like a much smaller beer. I do not think the carbonation is the problem as I find that solid.

Different sort of porter. Has some unique properties that does not make beer easy to categorize. Part Belgian, part British, and part American.

Pours a very thin, tan head. Body is black with dark coffee color highlights. Head retention and lacing died very fast and left no trace.

First smells are of candied stone fruits like figs and prunes. Sweet crystallized and roasted malts also are in play. Hops are not detected and alcohol is very light.

Taste is of tons of sweet dark fruits, i.e. prunes and raisins. Sweet malt is also present with some Belgian yeast in the background. Hops aren't a factor and alcohol is very light, as in nose. There is a slight soy sauce off taste that lingers unfortunately.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied for a porter, beer is well carbonated. Head immediately died so that deducted from its score.

Overall, this beer was slightly above average and not anywhere near my top 10 porters I've had. The off flavors present negated any good characteristics the beer had. Cool can, so-so beer.

From a 12 oz can, poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: It looked good while I was pouring it, a nice opaque black with a very faint deep ruby red color around the edges. I poured it semi-aggressive, the head exploded into a 3 finger head, and I would have liked to describe it, but it disappeared into absolutely nothing in less than two seconds. Other than that, looks like your standard porter.

Smell: Some roasted malts, and a slight sweetness which may be a faint fruit smell. It's a very pleasant smelling beer, which leads me into...

Taste: This is where this beer falls short. It's such an average porter. I can only taste what seems like a hint of milk chocolate and a tiny bit of coffee, but it's so subtle you can barely notice it. I've tried this beer cold, chilled, room temp, etc., to give it the benefit of the doubt, because I really wanted to like this beer. Sadly, it falls short in every aspect. I would recommend this as an introductory porter. Nothing is going to scare you away from this beer, it isn't bad, nothing stands out to keep you wanting another one, though.

Mouthfeel: It isn't as heavy as other people seem to think. It's about as heavy as Guinness, take that as you will.

Overall: I really, really wanted to like this beer. The smell drew me in, but the taste and thin mouth feel let me down. For the same price, you're better off picking up some Founders Porter.
