A striking, robust porter full of warmth and chocolate malt. Eugene is a robust porter named after Eugene V. Debs, an American union leader and activist who led the Pullman Railroad strike in 1894. An assortment of Belgian specialty malts form a complex structure of toasted grain and caramel flavors. Dark chocolate malt makes this porter black as night and infuses it with its distinct intense, chocolate essence.

Very dark brown color. Dimpled top to a thick and fluffy two-inch head that deflates slowly.

Caramelly grain, roastiness, fragrant coffee notes, some mustiness, wheat cereal, and toffee. Nice.

Coffee-forward, with chocolatey notes not terribly far behind. Some oxididation evident. Roasty flavor brings char and earthy sweetness. Dusty cocoa staves off the hops, which are nearly silenced. A little tangy in the finish.

Has a medium body with easy flow. Not a really bold body. The carbonation is a little weak, also. Missing something in the mouthfeel.

A good porter, but not worthy of "outstanding" status.

Wonderful dark color with a moderate tan head that does show some retention.

Raisins, cocoa, fig compote and powdered milk. Chocolate and coffee notes create and underpinning to support the other aromas. The nose is clean and relatively simple, with a blance and order to the aromatic composistion.

Medium roast coffee, bittersweet chocolate and powdered milk on the palate. A mild bitterness keeps everything clean. Very much in line with the Porter style. Carbonation is soft and balanced.

You can see that the breeding is in this beer and it is obvious that the brewery has a skilled team putting out high quality beer. This Porter is technically sound and nicely crafted, but I have to be honest that I was left wanting just a little more.

12oz can poured into a pint glass.

A: Pitch black with a thin one knuckle mocha head that dissolves fast.

S: Cocoa, anise, maybe even a little banana and clove.

T: Nice malty sweetness with a hint of caramelized bananas that flows
into a cocoa bitterness with elements of black licorice.

M: Smooth on initial sip, but there is a drying effect, but not overly
so, that is imparted by the bitter ending.

O: Nice aromas and flavors on this one. The bitterness flavor is quite
good. I usually I find Porter good from bitter to sweet, so I like
this inversion. However, I found the mouthfeel less impressive and a
trade-off for that bitter flavor. An above average porter, especially
when you consider it's in a can!
