The beer pours a very dark brown with just over a half finger of creamy off white head. The head doesn't stick around particularly well. There is a stronger than normal bitterness in the taste, but there is enough sweetness to back it up. I'm getting a coffee note in the taste, but it also shows up quite nicely in the smell. As I drink the beer, the bitterness is a bit overwhelming. The mouthfeel is creamy with very smooth carbonation.

Pours a very dark brown, with almost no head. Looks like I just poured a Coke.
This is going to be sweet! Chocolate, cream, and burnt sugar greets the nose wonderfully.
Cream, chocolate, nuttiness perfectly balanced and very smooth.
Mouthfeel is smooth as butter.
Overall I dig it, is it my favorite? No. But pretty darn good. Go drink it!

This was one of the many beers poured at the December Albany Taproom bottle share, courtesy of jdhowe (thanks!). Poured out of a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass. Freshness date was "3/16/12."
Wow, this is a pretty dark and thick looking stout, especially for a milk stout, although I suppose that the ABV and extra sweetness from the lactic sugars makes the difference overall. Contains an initially frothy white head that dissipates rather quickly into a ring, perhaps due to the beer's age at this point. This is relatively viscous for a milk stout, so it's actually pretty appealing looking.
While the lactic elements are indeed a bit faded at this point, it's still filled with a roasted quality and sweetened goodness that is very refreshing - this seems to be a trend with milk stouts coming out of the Midwest. Fudge, chocolate, light coffee, caramel, and light vanilla, all cover specific notes of dark fruit, most notably raisins, dark cherries, and blackcurrant. Pretty delicious overall, although I'd imagine this was even more powerful when it was fresher. I had the opportunity to try their Very Mad Cow beer at the brewery a while back, and NOW I know why I found it too lactic and sweet. Even at this age, it still retains the sweet flavor, and to be honest, it's just about the right spot for me.
Tastes far more mild, unfortunately, but does manage to be relatively refreshing and easy to drink overall. Notes of milk chocolate, cocoa powder, coffee, vanilla, and some dark fruit (I'm getting mainly dark cherry pits) glide across the palate, with a roasted character being most expressive, and some light sweetness ranging from faded lactic notes to toffee being most predominant. Finishes quite dry, with minimal sweetness, and the chocolate notes appear to last for a good long while. For a beer that's nearly 8%, I was shocked on how well hidden the alcohol is, and especially fascinated by how light bodied it feels. This could definitely benefit from going through a nitro-tap, as it does display many similar qualities to Irish dry stouts. Definitely enjoyable - will want to revisit this, however.
It's held up decently well, but I definitely wouldn't mind trying a fresher bottle the next time around. The chocolate notes are very well expressed, and it seems it could benefit from extra creaminess from the lactic notes. Tasty, and definitely as good in some ways to Left Hand's milk stout.
