My first Revolution beer -- and my favorite style. Match made in heaven?
$5 22 ounce brown bottle, label lists the beer at 5.7 ABV (report made). There's an ink-jetted date on the label that reads: 03.23.12 -- brewing date? Bottled on date -- awful early.
A -- Bright, clear copper-amber color with a rather skimpy light tan head.
S -- Sweet malts with nuttiness back. Some light extract/home-brew-like character -- even some wort-like graininess.
T -- Smooth, lightly bready malts with some light toastiness and a touch of sweetness before the hops finish with a very spicy bitterness. The bitterness lingers into the aftertaste and dry finish. There are mild fruit esters in the aftertaste that keep this from being a to-style clean lager.
M -- Mouthfeel is crisp with a light-medium body and that dry finish.
O -- Overall, not the best example of a Märzen Oktoberfest out there, but certainly a unique take on the style with a bitterness that isn't common. While not as balanced to the malts as the brewery suggests at their web site, it's not distracting either.
Is this a good rendition on a German Oktoberfest or a really well-made Amber Ale? The mild fruitiness in the aftertaste and the hop character leans me toward Amber Ale, but it's well worth trying.
