Poured into nonic pint glass; jet black with a big fluffy creamy tan head that fades after a bit leaving awesome rings of lacing. Smell is roasted malt, slight coffee, sweet chocolate, soft rye grain. Taste is sweet chocolate, bitter coffee roasted malt, and a hint of spicy grainy rye mixed in with it all. The rye grain adds an extra dimension to the mouthfeel, which is on the thinner side for a stout but the carbonation makes up for it.

A- This beer pours a dense black body with a faint garnet hint at the base of the glass with a creamy bubble tan head that last a bit.

S- The mellow dry char malt aroma has a yeast aroma to follow with some coffee roasted black malt hints coming thru as it warms.

T- The dry char black malt has some chalky notes and a watery rye zing in the finish that takes on a slight tartness as it warms. There is a faint smoky black malt taste that lingers but without any bitterness.

M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a gentle fizz but no alcohol heat.

O- This beer is thin but pleasant tasting with it could use a bit more character or depth. It drinks pretty quick but one pint is enough.

Appearance: Beautiful purple-brown elixir. Thick tan foam in the goblet. Very seductive.

Smell: Port wine and chocolate. A herbal, medicinal scent as well. Extremely balanced.

Taste/Mouthfeel: More port wine and chocolate. Also, I do taste the medicinal notes. Fairly creamy and smooth. I don't get a whole lot of rye, but it is there in subtle ways. I wish the flavor was a bit more complex, but this definitely is a winner.

Overall Drinkability: Excellent rye beer.

poured from tap into a pint glass at revolution. Pours a dark chocolate color with a small and foamy head.

Very good depth with rich aromas of espresso beans, cacao nibs, and roasted malts.

Full bodied with a good smooth feel. The finish is a bit clipped though and it's slightly lacking on the mid with notes of espresso beans, roasted malts and a good amount of dark chocolate.

This was a really good rye beer. There was a good amount of malts on both the aromas and flavors. Bigger without being too big.

I tried this on tap at the brewpub on Milwaukee Ave. My server recomended it to me after he informed me they were out of one of the beers I came there to try. Served in a pint glass for $5.

The beer was dark brown in color with a 1½-finger tan head that hung around for a couple minutes before receding to just a thin rim. Tons of spotty lacing clung to the sides of the glass.

Definite rye smell with rich maltiness and even a touch of coffee and dark chocolate.

It starts off sweet with caramel malt and chocolate flavors, but then the rye kicks in with a ton of spiciness. Add to that a touch of coffee and hop bitterness and you've got a very tasty beer.

Exceptionally smooth and creamy mouthfeel with carbonation on the low side.

I didn't come here to try this, but now that I did, I'll be back for more.

On-top at the brewpub; served in a pint glass.

A: Pours a near-black with a fluffy mocha head.

S: Smells of rich milk chocolate and french roast coffee.

T: Tasty chocolate forward stout with a very nice rye twang. A bit milky as well.

D: Expertly balanced and complex. Mouthfeel is creamy and slick, coating the mouth and resting heavy on the tongue.

Overall: This is an excellent example of how a little rye can make a great beer. This is expertly crafted, smooth, and ridiculously delicious. I will definitely be ordering another pint. Revolution does it again! Recommended!

A: Pours pitch black with a nice light an head. Nice looking beer.

S: Dark chocolate, lactose, lightly charred grain.

T: Mild dry roast, coffee beans, charred bread, dusting of cocoa, vague acidity (possibly from the rye?).

M: Medium-bodied with silky carbonation.

O: A very nice-looking and feeling stout, and very drinkable, but a little too mellow and dry in the taste.

Poured into a snifter.

3.0 A: Black color. Seems to be a bit overcarbonated as I got a huge frothy tan head. Retention is a bit below average and not much lacing is left.

4.0 S: Mmmmm. This smells quite nice. Deep chocolate with roasty coffee and caramel. Spicy earthy rye adds a layer of complexity. Molasses underneath.

3.75 T: Tastes like it smells. Lots of chocolate, which takes the focus of the beer. Roastiness, coffee, caramel, molasses. Spicy, earthy rye. This could possibly be higher if the carbonation didn't interfere with my taste buds. Seemingly no amount of swirling reduced the carbonation to an acceptable level.

3.0 M: Medium body. Way too much damn carbonation. It's a huge pain in the ass trying to drink this. I'm not sure if it's creamy or not.

3.5 D: I'm going to try to dissipate the carbonation for the second half of the bottle, but I had to review it the way it was.

Pours black looking very dark brown color with some mahogany color brown showing at the edges where the light hits it; had a massive 3 finger tan to light brown foamy head that faded slowly and left minimal spotty foamy lacing and a foamy layer on top.

Smells of roasted grains, burnt coffee, syrup, chocolate, herbs, and light citrus hops or lemon zest; some spices which I assume is the rye, metallic funk and a hint of caramel come out and lead back to the smoky grains and coffee notes.

Tastes like it smells, with roasted grains, burnt coffee, rye, syrup, light spices like white pepper and coriander, chocolate, herbs, charcoal, citrus hops, lemon zest, toasted wheat bread, metallic funk and cocoa powder. There is no real sweetness in the flavor considering how present the chocolate and coffee notes are in both the nose and flavor, with the rye seemingly evaporating the sweetness and letting the charred notes and burnt grain flavor take control and trail off smoky and on the clean and dry side with a hint of vanilla.

Mouthfeel is light and very thin for a stout, with a light body, a watery feel and light carbonation that finished smoky and on the clean and dry side. Definitely an interesting beer, but I can’t tell if it supposed to be a rye beer or a stout; it’s got a lot of nice roasted / burnt chocolate malt flavors, and a slightly bitter finish that’s clean and dry with a bunch of coffee and chocolate notes, but leaves me wondering, “what was the purpose of this beer”?

Overall it was tasty, easy drinking and hid the ABV quite well, but if you’re going to seek this out then you’d better be into smoked malts, coffee and chocolate flavors since those are the dominant flavors. More of a smoke beer with rye elements to me, but still a nice variation on several styles with good use of all the ingredients involved that made for a complex and flavorful brew.

Purchased from brew pub. Bomber bottle.

Appearance- black licorice pour, 1 finger dark white head settles quickly.

Aroma- licorice, toffee, molasses, bourbon. Slight roast of dark coffee but more sweet.

Taste- caramel, coffee, toffee, molasses. Dry,limited roast. Hops are hard to pick up. Definitely feels like a malty profile.

MF- Medium body, clean, soft smooth finish. Drinks easy.

Thought this would be more of a stout but feels like a complex porter. Complex malty profile that's easy to drink. Beer takes a whole to settle in and pick up the complex flavors. Awesome.
