Opened this up two nights ago. Bottled date is January 17 2014. It was not even a month old when consumed. Review from notes.

Appearance: Pour a brown-reddish with a half finger tan head. Dissipated rather quickly; only held for a minute or less. No lacing at all.

Aroma: Soft bourbon, oak, and lots of caramel. Some coconuts and marshmallows. Slight dark fruits and peach. Getting a little spicy alcohol as well.

Taste: Oak and bourbon up front. Subtle vanilla and coconut. The malts are a little rich. Lots of caramels and some toffee. Some dark fruits, mostly raisins. And peach, I'm not sure why I'm getting peach, but I'm tasting it. Also, some very mild chocolate as well.

The lingering finish is a nice long buttery oak with little flavors mentioned above. The buttery oak is actually very nostalgic to me.

Mouthfeel: Straight Jacket is not heavy at all. Drink pretty damn easy. Carbonation is light and a slick feel.

Overall: I thoroughly enjoy this beer. A good barrel-aged barleywine. I love finish of this beer as mentioned. I do not remember ever tasting that particular characteristic as strong in other barrel aged beers. Maybe I will get another bottle to age.

Pours dark dark brown with some dark mahogany hueswith a tan one finger head that retains nicely.

Smell is great. Loads of caramel malt forward with aromas of oak barrel some light bourbon aromas, lots of dark fruit mainly dates and figs. Some lighter vanilla and marshmellow aromas are also present though somewhat light.

Taste follows the nose. Lots of caramel malt forward woth a mild amount of sweetness before a great oak and bourbon flavor come to dominate the midsection. Slight flavors of bourbon soaked raisen vanilla and marshmellow that will probably come out more with age.

Mouthfeel is great big body for a big beer. Mild carbonation, great sipping beer.

Reall glad I have a bottle to age, this will do great things I'm sure.

22oz bottle - bottled 06DEC12

Appearance - pours thick, deep amber, almost red. head disappears quickly, but carbonation lingers. Thin on the lacing, but it's there...just not prevalent. Thought it was a bit too dark, perhaps a result of the barrel aging.

Smell - This is the fun part of this beer. There's so much going on here. I get a nice balance of powerful malt with the combination of bourbon notes. Bourbon comes off as if the guy next to you is drinking a fine bourbon and it leaves you wondering what he's drinking. There's a bit of toasty biscuits in there. Just an overall anticipation on how this is all going to play out...like the first time you...are at the plate awaiting the first pitch. I am a bourbon fan, so this smell hits home with me.

Taste - In a word...playful. this is a little over a year old right now, so I would expect some of the taste to develop. I get a lot of toasted coconut, some toffee-ness, and a lot of that great malt character. It is a bit overpowered, still, by the dryness of the ABV. At 13%, I think this beer still has a while to develop. The taste notes invite you to the party, but don't let you in just yet. You can see your ex-girlfriend over the bouncers shoulder, and you leave bitter and angry. Taste will be there, for sure. Of this, I have no doubt. It just may not yet be ready to fulfill it's potential.

Palette/Mouthfeel - The thin lacing is followed through on the palette. Given the smell, the initial taste notes, I wanted this to dance on my tongue. But the palette was thin...in the way you hope the next girl will make up for the last. But the silver lining is the aftertaste. What lingers is the bourbon notes and malt profile that serves as a reminder that this beer WILL be good...oh yes, it will be good. It will develop, grow bolder, and mature nicely. But like you're first time, it's still just not yet ready.

Overall - it's a REALLY strong brew. A well executed beer with some great potential. I think the grain bill and mix will yield a well developed barrel aged barely wine in another year or so. Hold on to this one, with age will come promise. And this beer has promise AND the ability to follow through in the future...
