Poured this beast of a black beer into my tall Spaten 0.5 liter glass, it's looking great thus far billowing tan burnt caramel head with another pitch black body...Aromatics bring it out in the front line with green hops really screaming through the black patent malts, dark chocolate not much perceived sweetness in the nose. The first, 2nd, and 3rd sips are screaming with hops, there comes a point in every American Stout's life when they should just fess up to being a Black IPA. That's definitely the case here without being a style Nazi let me tell you what I'm tasting: Dark espresso bean burnt quality, dark cacao style chocolate nibs, rolling hops fields of citrus and earthy hops collide with one another to create a rather harsh sipping American Stout...it's rough finish is hardcore flavor as is the hardcore carbonation is a bit rough, but overall I can see the light it's a brewer bringing the revolution by calling this hoppy ass black DIPA an aggressively hopped American Stout. Only 7.5% abv surprisingly delivers the alcohol warming effect pretty well or maybe I'm high on American hops and Nicaraguan tobacco.

Tasted on-tap at Revolution Brewing.

A: Pours a jet black with a one-finger khaki head. Moderate lacing.

S: Hops. Fresh hops. A hint of pine and booze.

T: The fresh, crisp taste of hops creates a somewhat subtle bitterness that is finished nicely by dark chocolate and roast.

M: Very good mouthfeel. A bit bitter at first taste but has a creamy, satisfying finish.

O: A somewhat unique stout that really borders on a Black IPA. I could easily enjoy this beer all throughout the colder weeks of fall.

thanks ryan for this!

pours jet black, rather thick for a 7.5% ABV. chewy looking body. light cocoa head.

sweet sugar, roasted malt, faint cherry and port.

sweet through out, roasted malt and dark chocolate kick in through the middle. some dark fruit, mainly light cherry begin to develop. through the finish a citrus hop flavor emerges. finishes sweet red grapefruit.

near perfect body. great thickness and chew. mild to moderate carbonation.

for the ABV, flavor, and overall awesomeness, seek this out

Appearance is pitch black and well carbonated. Almost no head.

Smells of chocolate, roasted nuts, and hot sugar.

Slight caramel, chocolate, burnt sugar, and a hint of coffee.

The mouthfeel is lush and smooth but a little thin for my taste.

Overall I was only slightly disappointed with this brew as I was looking for something thicker, but still a damn good choice.

Multiple growler pours, thanks to Chris for sharing!

Spruce needles and dried citrus peel hop aroma, along with some rich chocolatey malt notes. Jet black, thin layer of khaki colored foam rises and settles. Some carb trails visible around the edges of the glass.

Flavors come across more as a Black IPA, though the brewery describes it as an American Stout. Moderate grassy/citric hoppiness that builds over time, leaving a firm bitter aftertaste. In the middle its all deep roast and bitter dark chocolate. Some light astringency from the roast, otherwise smooth. Medium bodied and drinkable enough to have seconds. Pretty enjoyable stuff on a cool fall evening by the fire.

For all of those wishing to ask their sexy bartender for a rise, now comes your time..."Bartender, I was hoping you could give me a Rise." And the cool name transfers into a cool beer. An American Stout that remains true to its roots and stays a stout, rather than becoming an India Black Ale. Rise is black, complex, yet very drinkable. Not light in texture by any means. A great beer.

poured from tap into a tulip. Pours a dark chocolate color with a frothy head

The hops are noticeable with some citrus and floral aromas along with chocolate and some roasted malts

Medium bodied with much more of a hop profile than a stout. Good flavors of citrus, hops, some florals and bitter chocolate on the attack.

It's lacking a bit of depth and the hops dominate a bit too much for me. It comes off more as a black IPA than a stout

Thanks to Robbie for this one.
2012 Vintage; poured in to tulip.

A - Poured dark brown, settled black with one finger of medium brown head.

S - Massive hop aroma is noticeable before even putting the glass to my nose. Pine and grapefruit notes are present with lighter chocolate and roast flavours in the background.

T - Nice hop bitterness up front with greapefruit and pine flavours. The malt profile is very much secondary, adding some roast and chocolate in the finish. The hop profile definitely dominates this beer.

M - Medium body; somewhat creamy. Light carbonatoin.

I've been to the brewpub several times but never saw this one on the menu, so when I saw this 22oz bottle at the Binny's store in Bloomingdale, IL, I picked one up and brought it home.

The beer poured a very dark brown, almost black color, and made a 2½-finger medium tan head. The head lasted about 2 minutes and left some decent lacing on the glass.

Raisiny smell with bittersweet chocolate and earthy hops.

This is a stout that's more hoppy than malty. Lots of citrus and earthy hop flavor along with some raisin/plum fruitiness. There's a layer of bittersweet baker's chocolate underneath, and then finally you get some roasted malt to come through. There's a lot of bitterness here for a stout, but it's not overly harsh.

Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Some reviewers have commented that this is more like a black IPA than an American stout, and I agree with them. It's OK, but I wouldn't buy it again.
