look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Poured into an imperial pint glass and served at 50 degrees.

Appearance: Poured about a fingers worth of off-white, khaki tan head with a dark brown, almost jet black color body. Medium carbonation and effervescence and head retention. After about a minute only a thin lacing of head remains. After each sip a nice thin lacing sticks and remains on the sides of the glass.

Aroma: I immediately get the hops that are showcased in the front. The hops are very dominant in the aroma and every time I take a whiff, it makes me think of a Black IPA. I also received a strange ashy/charcoal smell but I’m assuming that it is from the large doses of hops used and the roasted malt combined. In the hop aspects, I get pine, some citrus/tropical fruits and a nice resinous pine and green tea hop bite. In the background I get the chocolate, cocoa, toasted grains, roasted coffee, a burnt char character, anise and a slightly sweet caramel.

Taste: The taste is much more pleasing than the aroma. In the taste, the malts are very well presented and are very well balanced with the wallops of hops. I’m getting rich cacao nibs, dark chocolate, toffee, dark roasted coffee grounds, licorice and a presence of anise that lingers to the end. There is a charcoal, ashy characteristic that is a bit displeasing but doesn’t ruin it for me. The hops settled down and the smoother malts came more forward when the beer warmed up. The hops aren’t just plainly bitter, floral and piney, there is some sweet tropical and citrus fruits that compliment.

Mouth feel: The body is medium, slick, smooth and the carbonation is just right. Pretty drinkable for 7.5%.

Overall: I did enjoy this for its merits and overall thought that it was pretty solid example for an American-style stout. If this had a pound more of hops to this brew, I would consider this a Black IPA. If you like your stouts much more hop forward and with a lot of roasted characteristics, try this out!
