Bottle from Masterski. Cheers!

From a bomber into a snifter

APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour yields a one finger, loose and fizzy, dark tan head with lousy retention. Head fizzes and crackles down to a splotchy wisp and ring. A clear bistre brown body with hints of carbonation. A ring remains but leaves no lacing down the glass. Ugly head, and rather annoying to listen to.

SMELL: Mild aromas, but quite nice and well balanced. Bourbon, oak, sweet vanilla, hints of coconut and some milk chocolate. Lightly roasted too. A little mild, but well integrated and smooth.

TASTE: Mild bourbon flavors with oak, vanilla and milk chocolate up front. The flavor comes out much more after the swallow with a bold and lingering finish of bourbon barrel, oak, sweet cream, coconut, some milk chocolate, bitter dark chocolate and some roasted grain. A hint of sweet caramel in there as well. A nice, smooth chocolate-bourbon finish lingers and lingers. This is plenty flavorful; too bad the feel hurts it.

PALATE: Thin body and high levels of carbonation. Airy and not smooth at all, goes down a little prickly and finishes sticky. Too light and carbonated for the style.

OVERALL: Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. The aromas were interesting and the flavor very enjoyable, but the looks was lousy and the feel ruined this beer's potential. Fill out the palate and you'd have a real winner on your hands here. I would love to try another batch of this stuff, but this one just misses the mark. Thanks again Masterski. (1,523 characters)

A: Very dark brown, almost black with a minimal beige head.

S: Lots of lightly roasted coffee beans and bitter dark chocolate. There is a bourbon character, though not very dominant - hazelnut/vanilla and wood, some heat.

T: Follows the nose but messier. Coffee and chocolate hit first, then a wave of barrel notes.

P: Very carbonated and light/medium body. I know it's a porter, but wish it were bigger and creamier

O: Probably much better on tap - Bean was a mess from the bottle and delicious on tap. (507 characters)

on tap @ revolution

from notes

appearance: 2 x 5oz samples, rich dark brown body, frothy mocha cream head - almost as if it were a nitro pour

smell: bourbon, chocolate, repeat

taste: the woodford reserve barrel comes through pretty strong - bourbon is strong with a bit of oak. Didn't try the base beer but I appreciate a nice bourbon barrel porter, and while a little sloppy, this one served the hair of the dog role well

mouthfeel: powerful bourbon, silky smooth

overall: nice, but could use some more body and depth of flavors (535 characters)

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pours almost black. A little transparent. Small khaki head and a nice collar.

Smell - Fruity more than anything else. Not a lot of barrel. Some oak. Chocolate.

Taste - Big fruity flavor. Chocolate. Faint barrel. Some liquor flavors. Oaky for sure, but not a ton of barrel.

Mouthfeel - Thin body. I know it's a porter but I want more.

Overall - Kinda disappointing. I like the fruitiness, but the rest is blah. (465 characters)

Dark cola brown, letting considerable light pass at the edges. A half inch of tan head after the pour that dissipates without leaving a trace.

Nice bourbon aroma. Woodford is known for it's high rye content in the mash bill and those earthy and spicy aromas poke through. Lots of soy and anise, chocolate to a lesser extent.

The barrels don't pop as much in the taste. Woody, soy, blackstrap molasses.

Mouthfeel is thin and low carbonation is low.

A decent beer, but doesn't hold up against other barrel agers. Mouthfeel was weak. For the price tag, pass. (563 characters)

Pours a rich dark brown and sits solid black in the glass with a thin layer tan foam.

Roasty, chocolate, and a light waft of bourbon.

Tons of dark chocolate notes, roasted malts, nutty, and a very faint sign of bourbon.

Heavy-bodied, light carbonation, lush chocolate sweetness, and some roasty bitterness.

Overall, a very tasty version of Eugene, but I was hoping for a little more bourbon character. (405 characters)
