Bottle from Masterski. Cheers!

From a bomber into a snifter

APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour yields a one finger, loose and fizzy, dark tan head with lousy retention. Head fizzes and crackles down to a splotchy wisp and ring. A clear bistre brown body with hints of carbonation. A ring remains but leaves no lacing down the glass. Ugly head, and rather annoying to listen to.

SMELL: Mild aromas, but quite nice and well balanced. Bourbon, oak, sweet vanilla, hints of coconut and some milk chocolate. Lightly roasted too. A little mild, but well integrated and smooth.

TASTE: Mild bourbon flavors with oak, vanilla and milk chocolate up front. The flavor comes out much more after the swallow with a bold and lingering finish of bourbon barrel, oak, sweet cream, coconut, some milk chocolate, bitter dark chocolate and some roasted grain. A hint of sweet caramel in there as well. A nice, smooth chocolate-bourbon finish lingers and lingers. This is plenty flavorful; too bad the feel hurts it.

PALATE: Thin body and high levels of carbonation. Airy and not smooth at all, goes down a little prickly and finishes sticky. Too light and carbonated for the style.

OVERALL: Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. The aromas were interesting and the flavor very enjoyable, but the looks was lousy and the feel ruined this beer's potential. Fill out the palate and you'd have a real winner on your hands here. I would love to try another batch of this stuff, but this one just misses the mark. Thanks again Masterski.

On tap at Revolution. Served in 5oz glass alongside Mean Gene today, 12/18/2013.

Pours just like Bean Gene but with a nice fluffy half finger tan head that retains briefly. After a while it looks just like Bean Gene. Placid, dark black body. Spots of lacing.

Smells kind of boring. Mostly bourbon and barrel vanilla. Nothing remains of the base beer. No chocolate, coffee, roast flavors. For all intents and purposes, this smells like watered down bourbon.

Flavor profile is pretty similar to watered down bourbon. The Woodford took over too much of the base beer. Barrel vanilla, sweet smoky bourbon. Not a big fan of its minimal complexity.

Thinner bodied, a bit watery. Aftertaste is primarily charcoal from the bourbon. Not that interesting.

Not going to lie, the Woodford Reserve barrels took way too much away from the base. I don't think I would recommend this, but if you want to drink it alongside Mean and Blue and E. Norma Gene, then it could be educational.
