Bean Gene is the first variation we did with our Mean Gene barrel-aged Eugene Porter.

After months socked away in bourbon barrels, we steeped it with Dark Matter coffee beans prior to bottling. Smooth and well-balanced, with hints of vanilla and an in-your-face coffee flavor, enjoy it at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Bottle from Masterski. Cheers!

Drank after Mean Gene

APPEARANCE: A clear brown pour yields a one finger, loose and slightly fizzy, dark tan head with lousy retention. Head recedes to a splotchy wisp and ring. A clear bistre brown body with hints of carbonation. A splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving dots of lacing down the glass. Better head and not as fizzy as the original.

SMELL: Coffee first, with lots of roasted espresso beans. Light notes of bourbon and oak underneath, with vanilla and dark chocolate playing a roll as well. Relatively coffee forward, but the other elements are to be found as well.

TASTE: Coffee and roasted flavors up front, then some sweet bourbon and espresso at the swallow. Milder yet lingering finish of roasted coffee bitterness, bourbon, sweet cream and vanilla, as well as some milk chocolate. Decently flavors.

PALATE: Lighter body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes slightly sticky. Fuller than above and smoother as well, which makes it more enjoyable.

OVERALL: This one is better executed than Mean Gene, but the flavor profile isn't quite as complex. While Mean Gene is still present here, the coffee is a little too forward for my palate. That said, the improved mouth feel makes it easier to drink, helping the beer realize its potential. In the end, this pair is alright, but nothing worth writing home about. Thanks again for the trade Masterski. Always a pleasure.

On tap at Revolution. Ordered alongside Mean Gene in 5oz glasses today, 12/18/2013.

Pours a relatively placid black body, minimal head. Looks very flat compared to Mean Gene sitting next to it. Not a lot of retention or lacing. Just about what I'd expect from black coffee, really.

Smells like black espresso. So rich. Complemented by dark chocolate and a bit of barrel vanilla. Very nicely done.

Flavor is black coffee flavors without the bitterness that is complemented by milk chocolate sweetness, bourbon, and barrel vanilla. Nice profile, not quite BCBCS but very enjoyable version of Eugene.

Medium to thinner body, good smooth flavor that just begs to be drank. Enjoyable, but a bit thin. As expected given the base porter.

I dug the coffee in this one, rich coffee and chocolate flavor. A bit thin but recommended.

Something was off with this one. Had kind of a pepper taste that didn't jive with the other flavors.
