Reviewing the Bean Gene from Revolution Brewing Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This is the barrel aged version of their Eugene porter with coffee beans added.

Score: 91

February 2013 vintage bottle served in a Perennial snifter-tulip hybrid glass and enjoyed on 05/23/13.

Appearance: Pours an inky black color with a finger of tan head that settles to a ring around the glass and foggy cap. Very good lacing, amazing lacing. 5/5

Smell: Oaky vanilla, coffee grounds, brown sugar and bourbon. A light amount of raisins and plums, some licorice and chocolate notes too. 4.25/5

Taste: The coffee is the first and last flavor I get, which is a little surprisingly given how much more subtle the coffee was when I had this on tap at the release. Oaky vanilla throughout as well. Bourbon flavor without the bite and cocoa too. The bourbon flavor grows and takes over as the beer warms up. Honestly, it tastes just like it smells. A little roast present too. The brew gets sweeter as the bourbon flavors (brown sugar, caramel, sweet vanilla and licorice) take over -- and causes me to downgrade the rating slightly due to the decreased complexity and drinkability. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, low carbonation. More viscosity would be nice, but this is a porter base that has spent time in barrels and the level of viscocity is not bad. Slick, slightly creamy mouthfeel with a light dryness to the finish. Sweet. 4/5

Overall: One of Rev Brew's better, but not their best, barrel aged projects. I think with a little recipe fine tuning, there is room for a lot of growth with this beer. The coffee element could use some tweaking to enhance the roastiness and counterbalancing bitterness elements, a la Coffee Eugene. Frankly, the barrel treatment eliminates a lot of the base beer's qualities, and the bourbon character is what really shines here outside the coffee flavor. I am not the world's biggest fan of the base, but Eugene is a solid porter. Can't wait to try the next batch!

Cost: $18.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

On tap at Revolution. Ordered alongside Mean Gene in 5oz glasses today, 12/18/2013.

Pours a relatively placid black body, minimal head. Looks very flat compared to Mean Gene sitting next to it. Not a lot of retention or lacing. Just about what I'd expect from black coffee, really.

Smells like black espresso. So rich. Complemented by dark chocolate and a bit of barrel vanilla. Very nicely done.

Flavor is black coffee flavors without the bitterness that is complemented by milk chocolate sweetness, bourbon, and barrel vanilla. Nice profile, not quite BCBCS but very enjoyable version of Eugene.

Medium to thinner body, good smooth flavor that just begs to be drank. Enjoyable, but a bit thin. As expected given the base porter.

I dug the coffee in this one, rich coffee and chocolate flavor. A bit thin but recommended.

22oz, Bottled 3/6/13
5oz mini snifter

A: Pours a nice deep brown, not black (it looks like a porter should). You get some light through it. Reddish hues through edges. Light tan head. Sticky lacing. Some alcohol feet, even with the small glass.

S: Nice vanilla. Smooth coffee. Oak. Chocolate.

T: Coffee and vanilla dancing on tongue. You get a nice mesh of chocolate and vanilla and roast coffee bitterness throughout this sip. But the body doesn't make it too much to take. I wouldn't say session beer, but you could enjoy this and have something afterwards. The bourbon integration is really nice. Awesome stuff.

M: Medium bodied.

Big thanks to wyatt13 for this bottle! Having tried the regular Eugene, then the Mean Gene, I'm really pumped about this variation!

Split with a friend, poured into a snifter.

Pours a jet black with a thin mocha head capping it off. Sweet aromas of vanilla cookies, bourbon, chocolate. Not a lot of roasted quality noted in the nose. A little disappointing in that respect. Good feel to it. Silky and creamy, but not too heavy feeling. Carbonation adds a little bite to it without over spritzing it. Good balance.

Sweet vanilla cream noted right off. A good wash of bourbon, oak, toffee rounds it out. I'm searching for some coffee presence, but there really is none. Maybe I sat on this too long, but this really isn't that old of a beer. I'd like a bit more roasted-coffee like char to balance out the sweetness, but it just isn't there. Still, I'm gonna rate this one higher because it's a fantastic beer, it's just not a fantastic "coffee" beer.

This poured thickly with a black color and a foamy head that laid thinly across the top.

The nose is earthy with a coffee bean and smoke but hints of marshmallow and chocolate are apparent.

The flavor has light coconut, a buttery cream, and marshmallow to open. Chocolatey sweetness follows with malted barley and oak wood.

The feel is dry but velvety smooth, easy but thick and full.

A thoroughly enjoyable beer with a good amount of sweetness to carry it as dessert.
