Dark brown body, reddish crimson highlights when held to the light. Plenty of lace, the head retreats slowly leaving behind sheets of lacing coating the glass in an intricate fan pattern. Great head retention, the surface never seems to break on this beer.

Aromas of toasted malt, light cocoa and fruity indistinct hops.

Flavors are similar to the nose, mild toasty malt sits underneath a muddled citrus fruitiness that never clearly expresses itself beyond "fruit". At first its maybe raisin, later citrus, who knows... only a muddled character prevails. Medium bodied with a slightly drying finish, the abv is less detectable. Overall it's interesting, an IBA I guess, but not really something i'd be excited to drink again.

Reviewing the Winter Woman Brown from Revolution Brewing Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This brew is the "imperial," extra hopped version of their Working Woman Brown.

Score: 91

Tap pour served in a 5 oz taster glass at the brewpub and enjoyed on 02/06/13.

Appearance: Pours a translucent, brownish crimson color with ruby transparencies. Served with only a ring around the glass of off-white head. 4/5

Smell: Chocolate, tropical citrus hops, and nuts. Faint caramel too. There is also something dessert like in the nose that I cannot put my finger on. 4.25/5

Taste: Cocoa, tropical citrus, brown sugar and nuts. Has an earthy hops and caramel/malt back bone. The hop bitterness shines in the finish and makes for an interesting lingering flavor with the cocoa. A light amount of alcohol warmth sits on the tongue (this one is 9.5% ABV). 4/5

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus bodied, medium-light carbonation. Well balanced, slightly bitter mouthfeel. Has a very mild "mouthwatering" effect on the palate. 4/5

Overall: Although I found that this drank more like an IPA with a brown ale twist than a traditional brown ale, I thoroughly enjoyed this brew. I frankly, for whatever reason, had low expectations going into this one and was pleasantly surprised by what Winter Woman Brown delivered. Revolution continues to pump out quality new beer regularly, and their lineup is surprisingly deep after three years of business. Keep up the great work guys!

Recommendation: Grab a pint of this next time you are at the pub!

Cost: $7 for a snifter, $3 for a 5 oz taster glass.

Served on tap at the 3rd year crazy party. Pours a deep auburn with nice clarity. Collar of tan head present with poor retention. Nose is heavy on brown malts and mild hop character in the form of pine. Taste is hop forward with pine, resin, and a touch of bready malts at the end. Mouthfeel is light with moderate carbonation. Overall, a nice hoppy brown.

On-tap at the Kedzie Taproom. Served in a 5oz taster.

A - Tan foam settles to a thin cap, thick collar, and splotchy lacing. Rich, transparent woody brown body.

S - A delightful mix of floral, citrus, and tropical fruit hop flavors, with a nice brown ale backdrop of chocolate, nuts, and light caramel. Was shocked to hear this was 9.5%, as it didn't seem much stronger than Working Woman. A bit understated, although it may have been served too cold.

T - The taste is similarly excellent, with a hefty dose of tropical fruits, citrus, cocoa, nuts, light roast, and caramel. Fairly low bitterness from either hop or roast, but not overly sweet either. More punch here, and the tropical hop flavors really stand out.

M - Smooth, medium body, pleasant carbonation, dry and toasty texture, and well-hidden alcohol.

D - Really excellent stuff. If I hadn't been headed for a beer tasting I would have ordered a glass, and I hope this is still around next time I visit Revolution. I loved Working Woman and this was exactly what I'd want from an Imperial version. Now put it in a bourbon barrel!
