On tap at the brewery
A - Dark, cherry wood with a deep brown and orange glow at the bottom and sides of the glass. Reflective and opaque as light reflects out from the glass. Barely any sign of a head
S - Sweet rum, vanilla, slight pear and caramel. There is also a slight amount of alcohol that you pick up from the rum as well
T - Lots of rum in this one up front. There is date, caramel, and vanilla combined with bready malt in the middle. All of these flavors together reminded me of Baba O Rum. Slight rum soaked dates and oak linger on in the the finish. This one is slightly boozy as the rum makes itself known. I'm actually surprised how much rum is in here since this did not spend that much time in the barrel.
M - Medium slightly sticky body with low carbonation. There is light oak and astringent alcohol that lingers in the finish
O - A nice rum BA beer with lots of rum presence without being overpowering. I like getting the spicy and dark fruit flavors of the barleywine with the slight alcohol bit. This one is very well done and one of Rev's better BA offerings

22 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.
Appearance - Deep amber. Nice white head. Medium collar. Some surface wisps.
Smell - Rum. Oaky. A bit of citrus. Caramel.
Taste - Caramel. Sharp oak. Intense oak, really. Rum comes back in a boozy finish.
Mouthfeel - Very boozy. Medium heavy. Way too oaky.
Overall - It's too oaky and the rum doesn't contribute as much as other liquors would.

Translucent rusty brown body with no visual caebonation or head.
The smell is muted, but does have some raisin, cane sugar, and toasted coconut.
The taste is very sweet. Again, cane sugar and raisins. I even think i picked up plantain but that might just be the rum playing Caribbean tricks on me. The rum doesn't impart much booze as I was expecting. There's a touch of rubbing alcohol in the finish.
Mouthfeel is heavy and almost cloyingly sweet but it is cut with good carbonation.
It's an ok and interesting beer but I couldn't recommend it based on price alone.

On tap at the Kedzie brewery, 5 oz. pour plus a little more.
Deep amber, reddish at the top, sunset orange at the bottom. Thin layer of foam, thin ring at the edges after a few moments. Nice clarity, glassy still surface.
Aroma is pretty subdued, slight sweetness, that's about it.
Pretty distinct rum flavor, brown sugar and coconut, overt alcohol. Minor almond cake and oatmeal. Huh. Wish it had a little more to it, just a big boozy sweet beast. Creamy feel, full bodied. Overall not one I'll personally return to, but if you're a rum fan give it a spin.

Huge thanks to Robbie for this bottle. Bottles Jan 2013. Poured in to snifter.
A - Medium translucent amber colour with almost no head.
S - Sweet rum and toasted oak with dark caramel, toffee, raisin and spice aromas.
T - Sweet rum, toasted oak and a light coconut presence up front. Mid-palate is where the base beer shows up, adding sweet caramel, toffee and raisins. Finish is spiced rum. Warming alcohol throughout.
M - Medium body, almost full bodied at times. Light carbonation.

Reviewing the 3rd Year Beer from Revolution Brewing Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This brew, created in honor of the company's third year of existence, is a wheatwine brewed with piloncillo and aged for four months in Jamaican rum barrels.
Tap pour served in a 5 oz taster glass at the brewpub and enjoyed on 02/06/13. This review is from iPhone notes.
Appearance: Served with a ring of head around the glass. 4/5
Smell: Vanilla, rum, molasses, faint wood and malt. Caramel and toffee too. 4.25/5
Taste: Very barrel flavor forward and slightly boozy. Sweet rum, molasses, vanilla, dark sugar and a little biscuity malt. A distinctive vanilla cake flavor comes through as the beer warms up. There is a lot of alcoholic warmth, but this is nothing unexpected at 11.2% ABV. This brew is definitely a sipper, but the more I sip, the more I like it and the more I find the brew complex. I can imagine this mellowing out and aging well with some time in the cellar. 4.2/5
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, low carbonation. Slightly sweet. Faintly dry. 4.2/4
Overall: A really nice and complex beer by Revolution to celebrate their three years of existence. It's a little boozy and hot fresh, but the flavor profile should age well as the beer mellows out over 6-12 months. I would recommend snagging a bottle while they are still around; this is one of the better wheatwines I have had to date.
Recommendation: Snag a couple of bottles from the taproom and be sure to age one.
Cost: $5 for a 5 oz taster glass or $9 for a 9 oz glass.

Big thanks to scalzo for this one! Bottled 1/13
Body is swampy, reddish brown with a wispy bit of carb on top that produces more legging than lacing.
Big, warming malts. Not nearly as sweet on the nose compared to Straight Jacket, which is something that I can appreciate. It's dry vanilla, berries, spicy booze qualities... I like this so far. It's not massive, just well-executed.
Fresh tobacco flavors, vanilla, tasty rum presence, a bit of that caramel and toffee. The addition of wheat to the mix is fitting and pleasant, although busy.
This stuff is really damn good.

22oz into a snifter.
A. Pours a rich reddish copper, small beige head.
S. Cane sugar, cinnamon-like spice from the barrel, marshmallow, sweet rum, caramel.
T. Leafy rum, a bit of booze, oaky bitterness, a bit of a hop note, nutty, tannic toffee and vanilla.
M. Medium-bodied with light carbonation.
O. Pretty interesting beer, one that uses the rum barrel pretty well. It's a bit boozy feeling at this point, though. I still like it quite a bit.
