On-tap at the Revolution brewpub. Served in a tulip.

A - Tan foam settles to a thick collar and splotchy lace. Near-black body with a glint of brown at the fringes of the glass.

S - Nice sweeter chile aroma , with with coffee, cocoa, cinnamon, and a touch of vanilla.

T - Taste is a bit more roasty and bitter - a very dry stout with cocoa and coffee. The nibs aren't as sweet as you'd expect and combine with the peppers to give a slightly vegetal character. Not a ton of chile heat, with perhaps a light tingle on the lips. Tastes a bit lighter than the listed 7%.

M - Medium-light body, smooth texture, with higher carbonation. Chiles impart some burn by the end of the glass.

D - A nice chile stout, with good integration of spice, chile, and malt flavors. Seems a tad undersized for the listed ABV, but otherwise quite enjoyable.

Got this off tap when I was at the brewpub yesterday, was served in a tulip.

A: Pour a robus dark black brown color, opaque, with a short light brown head with bits of lacing.

S: Invigorating, coffee, spices, cocoa, malts, barley

T: Tastes great, very sweet, coffee, chocolate, barley, malts, spices, herbs, very rich

M: Has a very robust, complex, rich, full body to it, the mayan spices makes it very interesting

O: Overall, this was a delcious beer, very unique, another pleasing beer from Revolution. Recommended by me.

Appears opaque black with dark brown head. Nose features heavy bitter roast, cacao, and dry pepper. I mainly get the aromas of a nice dry stout with a wave of pepper. Taste is heavy on the cacao character with pepper and light cinnamon I. The middle. The finish is dry with a touch of residual heat. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy with moderate carbonation. Overall, this doesn't exactly scream mole like abraxas or some other similarly styled brews, but is still a solid brew.

On tap at he Kedzie brewery, served in a tulip glass.

Jet black body with a dark tan mocha head that recedes after a minute or so. Spotty lace that sinks slowly back into the foam ring. A dusty barely there skim across the top like a veil of cobwebs.

A bit of dark chocolate, dry coffee, and raisin from the guajillo.

Dry and bitter like quality dark chocolate, hint of espresso, dry pepper, not too spicy really, just a hint of a tingle there. Smooth chocolatey feel, finishes pretty dry from the peppers (seemingly). Raisin is there in a small capacity, also seems derived from the guajillo peppers. Overall smooth and easy drinking, not over the top. Interesting though not quite as complex as some other chile-infused mole stouts.

Many thanks to jegross2 for the growler! Poured from the 64oz Revolution Brewing growler into a New Belgium globe glass.

A - Pours black with minimal creamy light tan head. Lacing recedes quickly.

S - Dark chocolate and chiles are huge up front, with a hint of what I can only call "burnt rice" aroma.

T - The chiles take a backseat to the cocoa here. This tastes overwhelmingly like a dark chocolate bar. Faint pepper taste, with no hint of the cinnamon that's supposedly present in this beer.

M - Typical stout mouthfeel. Not thick, but not Central Waters thin, either. Creamy, low carbonation, with a slight, pleasant burn from the peppers.

O - A chocolate bomb of a single stout with a pleasant hint of peppers. Huge flavors for a 5.2% beer. I'd easily have this again if I saw it on tap.

Reviewing the Zanate Mole Stout from Revolution Brewing Company out of Chicago, Illinois. This beer is a stout brewed with guajillo chiles, cinnamon and cacao nibs in honor of the Handlebar's tenth anniversary.

Score: 95

Tap pour served in a tulip glass at the brewpub and enjoyed on 02/14/13.

Appearance: Traditional stout appearance. Black in color, served with a thin coating of tan head that dissipates to a bubbly ring around the glass. Poor lacing and retention. 4/5

Smell: Huge aromas of unsweetened bakers chocolate, cocoa nibs and dark chocolate followed by much subtler notes of cinnamon and pepper. The chocolate notes are what really shine in the nose of this beer; it smells like a pure cacao dark chocolate bar! 4.5/5

Taste: This tastes like Mexican dark chocolate! Perfect balance of bitter and sweet from the chocolate here, with a nice dryness in the finish. Cocoa nibs again shine (bakers chocolate and dark chocolate too). There's a very light pepper flavor in the finish with a residual peppery prick on the tongue after the swallow at first. The peppers layer nicely as the beer warms, but they never get intense. The peppers here are quite subtle compared to most pepper-infused stouts. I am not really tasting any cinnamon at all. The beer is not very complex like say Hunahpu's, but it is still a delectable dark chocolate bomb that is easy drinking with easy-to-enjoy flavors. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: Zanate has a good level of viscosity that falls a little shy of "full bodied." Very low carbonation in this brew. Silky, slightly creamy on the tongue. Has a nice peppery kick and a mildly dry finish. Delightfully balanced. 4.5/5

Overall: An absolutely smashing success of a beer that is second only to Red Scare/Skull among Revolution Brewing Company's very deep line up of non-barrel aged beers. It is super chocolatey, and the pepper adds a nice, subtle complexity. I cannot get over how this tastes like a bar of Mexican dark chocolate bar! I would absolutely love to see what aging this in Rittenhouse barrels (with additional peppers added to prevent that character from falling off) would do. My best is advice is to rush over to the pub and grab a pint of this before the keg kicks!

Pairing: The Guajillo Pepper Chili that Revolution serves at the brewpub with tortilla chips, chihuahua cheese and sour cream...yum!

Cost: $6 for a 13 oz tulip glass.
