I picked this up at the Binny's store in Bloomingdale, IL. $4.99 for a 22oz brown bottle. No freshness date and no information about the beer on the label. I did learn from their website that the "crystal" in the name is named after the predominant HOP variety used in the beer and not for a girl's name or for crystal malts.

The beer poured a hazy pale yellow color with a huge 3-finger white head that lasted about 2 minutes. Lacing was decent but there wasn't a ton of it.

I was picking up 2 main smells from this pour. First I got a fruity and citrusy aroma, followed by a fresh flowery smell. Pleasant, but not all that strong.

Strong grapefruit/tangerine flavor, which was interesting and unexpected since that is NOT a characteristic of crystal hops. There are obviously other hops in here as well. Bitterness is high at 80 IBUs, but there is enough malty sweetness in it to keep it balanced.

Medium bodied with extra high carbonation, yet it manages to still border on being creamy smooth. There seems to be more bitterness in the aftertaste than while it's in your mouth.

I liked it but not ready to put it in the outstanding category. Another solid offering from Revolution.

(Served in a tulip glass)
A- This beer pours a clear yellowish-apricot body with a strong matrix of microbubbles. There is a thick rocky white head that sticks to the glass in lumps.

S- The aroma is like opening a fresh bag of hop pellets bright and green leaf qualities.

T- The green bright woody hops have a touch of sweetness in the finish with a lightly bright pungent aftertaste. There is a nice cream flavor that comes through in the malt flavor.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a tight little fizz that creates a nice creamy texture as it opens.

O- The nice IPA has some interesting classic character to the hops and a nice flavor. I’m not sure it is enough to be a hero but it is one tasty pedestrian.

Appearance: Good session ale. Golden with great lacing.

Smell: Lots of fresh grapefruit. One of the more citrus-oriented IPAs I've ever had.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Lots of grapefruit. A nice caramel backbone and some grass. Medium-bodied with great carbonation

Overall: Very good IPA. Did I mention the grapefruit?

Appearance is bright sun yellow and pours crisp.

Definite floral, light fruit, earthy, and hints of pine.

Taste is very refreshing and very hoppy. A great choice for grilling outside. Slight fruit, floral, and slight pine notes dominate overall taste.

Mouthfeel has some bite, very well carbonated and an excellent late spring/summer brew.

Overall another great selection from Revolution, can't wait for their Citra-Hero!

Poured from bottle into a pint glass. Pours a clear gold color with a nice head.

Very floral and lifting aromas with tropical citrus, papaya, oranges, hops, and some white florals.

Medium/full bodied with a nice and crisp finish. This is well balanced with fresh notes of tropical citrus, papaya, and a god amount of oranges.

This is a delicious IPA. There is a very floral quality to it and it's very smooth as well.

A-Clear amber, not much carbonation and a one finger head.

S-Good deal of bready malt. Rather heavy on it. Some light citrus.

T-Starts with bread and malt, some spice, slight citrus and a tad bit of grass.

M-Lighter, not much carbonation, crisp finish.

O-Had at the brewpub, compared to Anti-Hero I thought it was a let down too malty for my tastes.

A: A light straw yellow. small head but after some swirling a big fluffy white head shows up!

S: Tropical. Pineapple and grapefruit with lots of lemon and citrus. Lemon grass and earthy notes come into play as well.

T: An ode to the gods of citrus. Lots of citrus and lemon> Very floral and grassy. Dandelions and honey. Honey dew melon is really the flavor that pushes this from a good to great beer IMO. Not that bitter though.

M: Crisp and clean with a really quick finish.

O: This was great! Very easy drinking with loads of floral, citrus and grassy characteristics in the flavor and aroma. More please! /90

22oz into a tulip.

A: Pours a clear straw-gold with a nice white head.

S: Juicy mango and pineapple dominate the nose. Some mild vanilla and fresh grain from the malt base. Really fresh aroma.

T: Taste brings oily grapefruit pith, clean tropical fruit notes with a slight herbal edge, mildly sweet bready malt base underneath.

M: Light-bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: This is a fantastic, juicy IPA with a clean malt base that doesn't get in the way of the awesome Crystal hop profile. Reminds me of some Alpine IPAs. I'd like to see this brewed again with some regularity.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours classic golden with a slight haze but still can see through it; small fluffy eggshell white head that leaves nice retention but not too much lacing. The aromas smell great, but they don't blast you. I just wish they were a bit more intense. Lots of earthy tropical notes. Lots of watermelon and mango. Some peach. Some bread. The flavors are extremely clean and crisp. It's like water at times. There's a solid bitterness to it. Some pine and grass in the mix. Some pineapple and lemon is there too. Some grass. Very refreshing. Mouthfeel is great. It's medium-bodied with active spritzy carbonation. This is an extremely easy drinking beer. Goes down too smooth.

The craftsmanship on this beer really is impressive. Although I wish it popped a bit more overall, this is just about as clean, crisp and refreshing as it gets for the style. I still like Galaxy-Hero and Anti-Hero more, for what it's worth.

Poured from a bomber into a Boulevard Smokestack stem glass.

A: The look of this one is awesome. Very clean in appearance. Fully translucent body. Silky off-white head that clings almost fully to the glass and sticks around for several minutes before fading into a light frothy layer on the top.

S: Exotic and citrus fruits explode into the nose. Pineapple, mango, grapefruit, and tons of orange and tangerine. Ever-so-slight bready malt character.

T: The taste does not let down from the stellar appearance and waft. More exotic pineapple and mango than grapefruit, though there is some definite tangerine-like character in there. Slight citrus peel bitterness, but the sweetness that balances is spectacular.

M: Medium body, but drinks dangerously light. Very sharp, clean, crisp, and refreshing. Oily and moderate-heavy carbonation.

O: This was one of the most pleasant surprises in a brew in a very long time. I had high hopes after galaxy hero, and this completely blew away expectations. Very reminiscent of Pliny. So much so, that I feel like west-coast BA's would hunt me down and kill me for saying this, but I think I'd be hard pressed to distinguish which was which, if blindly tasting them side-by-side.

Appearance (3.75) - Pours a glassy light orange amber. Emphasis on the light and clear look. Doesn't poor with much of a head at all - kind of disappointing. Immense amounts of carbonation are coming to the top. Minimal lacing.

Smell (4.50) - Wow this smells great. It has that sharp crisp smell which I can only guess are crystal hops. Reminds me of the citrus hop smell of ZD. It has a creamy/smooth backbone to it though. Slight hints of vanilla. Super fresh and complex smell.

Taste (4.25) - Super interesting. Its got the refreshing character of super hoppy beers without being overwhelming at all. The hop crunch is towards the front of the taste and it really smooths out after that. Though there are hints of fruit (not sure which one) that's not the main attraction. Like the smell, there seems to be a creamy quality somewhere in there after the bitterness.

Mouthfeel (4.25) - Very refreshing and crisp. Even though there is plenty of hop body its not overwhelming at all. Taste sits heavy in the mouth for a bit, but is never too much. A pretty easy drink.

Overall (4.25) - This is a pretty sweet beer. I'm sure getting it pretty fresh helps. Refreshing, plenty of hops, some good complexity. It only really lacks in the appearance, and within that, only in the lack of head/lacing. I'm definitely going to pick me up another one of these bad boys.

Consumed June 30th, 2013.

Beer pours a lighter yellow than expected. Hmmmm.... Very clear. A one-finger yellow-white head appears and provides decent sheeting throughout.

Aroma is a little floral but a lot fruity: citrusy and tropical. Not too far removed from citra hops, but with a sharper edge. Slightly dank as well.

Some nice, nondescript malt character at the start, but this is more about the hops. They are not overpowering, thankfully. Slightly sweet up front, then lots of grapefruit and lemon with accompanying mildly acidic bite. A little herbal (grass, flowers, hay) with moderate bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is a little prickly but clean; finish is nice and quick.

I was surprised by how much I liked this one! This is the kind of IPA I can get behind.

Served in a Local Option cervoise.

Finishing the night off with some Revolution nonsense. It pours a clear sunrise amber topped by a finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises sweet grapefruit zest, sweet biscuit, and light caramel. It's all pretty sweet, but in a way that helps out IPAs of this ilk. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some light pine needle and a hint of mixed greens for good measure. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a very nice IPA, a fine showcase for the Crystal varietal.

22oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a rather pale, peachy golden color with moderate haze and a short cap of white foam that shows good staying power.

S - Smells like fresh grapefruit juice...really nice. Grapefruit peel, mild sugary sweetness, Not very complex, but really inviting.

T - Thankfully, follows the aroma very well. Again, grapefruit dominates - almost like a fresh squeezed glass of juice. Mid-level bitterness that still gives the grapefruit impression more than it does any kind of hoppy bitterness. Very faint caramelly malt at the base, a little bit of sugary malt sweetness.

M - Thinnish body, slightly watery in feel, prickly mid-level carbonation, faint malt sweetness.

O - Simple, straight forward without a lot of complexity, but tons of citrusy grapefruit character makes this a very solid IPA. I love the fresh grapefruit juice character from beginning to end - really pretty satisfying.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but was a recent release. Pours slightly hazy bright orange color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge mango, tangerine, pineapple, peach, papaya, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, light caramel, and floral/grassy earthiness. Outstanding aromas with huge complexity of citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt balance; with great strength. Taste of big mango, tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, papaya, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, light caramel, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of floral/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of mango, tangerine, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, papaya, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, light caramel, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of bright juicy citrus/tropical hops with moderate pale malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome IPA. All around great complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Apperance is a very pale yellow with crystal clarity (no pun here), short white head with some sticky lacing. Nose is dank with herbal and pine hops, much more aromatic than the regular Anti Hero. Notes of bready grain shine through as well. The taste is fruity up front with and herbal and pine onslaught of hops. Notes of grass, weed, pine, and resin pair with a somewhat malty base which adds a bit of sweetness to the table. Mouthfeel is light and moderately carbonated. Overall, this is my favorite iteration of the Hero series. The hops seem so much more pungent than Anti and Galaxy hero. Could drink this one for days..

Nice looking beer. And it tastes good too. Crisp hop profile. Mild resin with a clean overall profile. There is a sweet tone that dominates this beer, but doesn't get obnoxious or overdone at all. Very easy to drink and a very smooth IPA. An excellent beer. Grab this one if you see it.

650ml bottle poured into a Dogfish Head custom IPA glass.

The beer pours a lightly golden straw color, hues of light copper, clear complexion with a slight chill haze. A finger or so of soapy white head rises out of the glass that has moderate retention and leaves behind a trickle of lace. The aroma is of bright citrus, grapefruit and tangerine, wildflower that is soft yet has a prickle of spice, that leads to soft biscuity pale malt and some sweet sugary malt. The flavors are a bit more on the bitter side, piney hops with a bit of spice, grapefruit and floral notes but quickly turns to pale biscuity malt and a granular sugar flavor that comes with it. The body is nice, juicy and coats the mouth well with a sweet yet dry finish.

Verdict: A decent IPA from Revolution, but this version is a bit of a downgrade from Anti Hero and not anywhere in the same realm as Galaxy Hero. It's a bit overly sweet and malty and really lacks the fresh hop character that makes Anti Hero so good.

22oz Bottle
Route 6 Liquor's - Channahon

Bottled: 4/24/14

Pfft...gunsmoke. The pour yields a crystal clear body that glows polished bronze. Copper highlights streak throughout. Tiny carbonation bubbles continue replenishing the dirty white head long after the pour. The foam was short on the pour and the active bubbles keep it no higher than a skim coat that leaves. Behind sticky lace.

I'm a big fan of Anti-Hero and I'm a big fan of Crystal hops. The nose is chock full of citrus and tropical fruits. Mango and papaya are in your face before juicy apricot and musty peach join the fray. Pineapple and orang marmalade bring a candy like note to the nose. Mild resinous characteristics border on old leather to wrap up the hop profile. Sweet biscuit malt with a drizzle of caramel lay a solid foundation. A whisper of peppery alcohol adds more depth. This will get you salivating.

Bright tropical notes get things going. Mango, again, ripe and juicy is numero uno before the leathery, dried apricots join the party. Pineapple is ripe and lactic sweet while other, unknown tropicals dance around in the background. A jammy, orange marmalade quality is evident. That biscuity malt lies in the flavor, as in the nose, with just a touch of caramel sweetness. The alcohol is nowhere to be found. This is juicy!

The carbonation shows some push, leading the moderate body through with some assertiveness. The body is amazingly soft while drying up on the swallow. Bitterness is low, never even reaching moderate, but leaving a little tingle on the tongue. Drinkability you ask? Off the charts.

Crystal Hero is flat out delicious. It's tropical juicy with enough of that leathery quality to keep it unique from all the other tropical hop bombs out there. It's juicy and immensely drinkable. I would love to see Crystal used more in beer these days. Great job guys! -slow clap-

On-tap at Revolution. Served in a tulip.

A - White foam settles to a thin cap, thick collar, and splotchy lacing. Transparent golden body.

S - Zesty citrus hops, some pine and pithy grapefruit, over top of a sweet biscuit and light toffee malts. A nice, solid, balanced IPA.

T - The taste is a bit more malt-heavy, with icing sugar and lightly burnt brown sugar in the mix. Again, quite zesty, with notes of citrus, and moderate piney bitterness.

M - Dry, lightly toasty texture, with a slightly oily finish. Pleasant carbonation level, and mild alcohol warming that is a bit surprising for only 7.2%.

D - Solid IPA. I think I ended up liking this nearly as much as Galaxy IPA, and the reduced bitterness makes it a tad more drinkable. Guess there's some life still in these old school hops. Would drink this one again.

A: Clear yellow in color. Forms a modest sized, very white head. Decent retention. Light lacing.

S: Pleasant aroma. Mild sweetness. A bit of caramel malt, maybe a slight hint of toast, but the hops dominate. Citrus and a grassy herbalness.

T: Taste is similar. Light bodied. More citrus: orange and a touch of lemon brightness. Mild pale malts. Mild herbal hops on the finish.

M: Lighter side of medium. Crisp. Mild to moderate sweetness. Mild bitterness. Medium carbonation.

O: A very nice, very approachable IPA. Easy drinker. Hop forward, but not a hop bomb.

Pours light gold with a 1 finger head that retains decently.

Lots of great grapefruit aromas. Also has hints of earthy grass that blends well with the grapefruit and citrus aromas. There's also a slight hint of bubblegum sweetness, very plesent.

Some of the bubble gum and citrus pulls through and is balanced nicely with the malt. Bitterness is there but not overwhelming.

Very refreshing. Has a good hoppy oily feel. Moderate carbonation give this beer a nice crisp feel

Overall this is a great ipa. Aromas and body blend nicely to give it a crisp citrus feel. I'm glad that the bitterness wasn't overdone and that the hops were concentrated primarily in the aromas and flavor.

Growler obtained from local Heinen's for the happy Father' day price of $7.99.

Clear straw-yellow elixir poured into GFH chalice. One-finger cotton white head, lingers then forms a tight, thin rim during the tasting. Few wisps of thick lacing coat the glass.

Mango, lemon, orange rind predominate.

Nice tropical fruits with minimal malt. Perfect combo for this hophead.

Medium body, tangy, well carbonated.

Very nice IPA, perfect for the summer.
