Notes/Commercial Description:
A German-style pilsner that gets its name from the Emma Lazarus poem, "The New Colossus," where she describes her personal interpretation of the Statue of Liberty as the "Mother of Exiles." This beer has a spicy, slightly grassy flavor that kicks in mid-palate and continues on to a crisp, bitter finish. Being a lager-style beer, we gave it an extended cold aging period, which adds to its clean drinkability.

A bright and beaming yellow-gold pours out of the bottle and into the glass; you couldn't really ask for any better clarity, this has a very nice, filtered look about it. The wispy and thin, bone-white head doesn't waste any time reducing itself into a tiny collar that stretches nimbly along the edge of the brew, leaving behind only a few, small traces on the sides of the glass.

I don't necessarily expect the aroma of pilsners to explode, and while this once certainly does not (it's a bit more muzzled than I'd like), it still smells pretty nice. Fresh barley, grains, and a good hint of bready, billowing yeast. Not much in the way of hops on the nose, and that can probably be my biggest complaint about the aroma (well, that, and the low volume). I wanna smell the Nobles!

The first sip is full of sweet pilsner malt, a touch of graininess in the back-end, and - what do you know - a finishing kiss of blanketed, musky hops. The hops are most certainly of the Noble type, and come off with a mild grassy tone and a musty, slightly bitter finish. Though they were scarce on the nose, I can forgive the hops, thanks to their appearance on the palate.

That mild bitterness from the hops stretches itself into a yeasty finish, full of handfuls of bread, grain, and some finishing malt sweetness as well. Very crisp and clean, as a lager should be, with that thick and almost clumpy yeast finish, despite the thin and frail nature of the beer itself. Carbonation is at a good level, and allows the beer to snap your palate along with the sharp yeast.

Bottom line: A nice, easy drinking, fresh-tasting pilsner that will flow down your gullet as fast as the day is long. I wish the nose was a bit more pronounced and the hops showed themselves a bit more up front, but all-in-all, I wasn't disappointed by this beer at all. I just wish I didn't have to drive down to Ohio to get it.

I had Revolution’s Mother of Exiles on tap at Sheffield’s. It was served in a standard shaker pint. The beer is gold with a slight chill haze.

It has a nose of grains, spice (white pepper comes to mind) and floral notes.

Taste is grainy and slightly bitter. It reminds me of a slightly hopped-up Bitburger which is a good thing in my book. Spice and floral notes, something a bit mineral like and it finishes a touch sour. It is really fresh and crisp.

Why can't this be a year round offering??

The Mother of Exiles is a very good pilsner. The beer poured a golden clear with thin white head that dissipated...but did leave some lace. The scent carried some biscuit and grass. The taste was a very surprising balance...there was enough hop and sweet malt to blend into a very easy drinking beer....even on a humid afternoon. The mouthfeel was a medium/light body with good carbonation. Overall this was a good pilsner and I would not shy away from additional helpings.

It looks the part of a pils to me, a bright and clean pale yellow with a fluffy sort of white head making a nice, almost billowing pillow on top. It stays for the long term, dropping slowly and leaving behind patchy lacing as it does.
Slightly spicy with a dry and crackery note as well as doughy biscuit, it's balanced by gently grassy and herbal hops.
Particularly after the aroma, I'm caught a little off guard by the sweetness. The peppery spiciness, grass and herb are accentuated by a little earth and a sort of doughiness to the yeast, which is likely where the fruity sweetness is coming from. There's still plenty of dough, not as dry as in the aroma, and it's finished by a bit of leaf. It could use more hops presence for a German take, but it's a good pils.
The body is medium with a solid carbonation giving some crispness, as it should.

Bottle from Binny's Lakeview. Served in a pilsner glass.

A - White foam settles to a thin cap, thicker collar, and splotches of lacework. Transparent golden straw body, with tons of slow-moving bubbles visible.

S - Smells like a pils alright, with buttered biscuit and crackery malts, cereal grains, and some herbal note hopping. Not the most potent aroma, but pretty true to style.

T - The taste is quite a bit sweeter, with cereal grains, yeasty bread, and doughy flavors. A bit of grassy hop and nebulous fruitiness late, with a lower level of bitterness. A bit sweeter than I prefer; vaguely Urquell-esque.

M - Medium body, pleasant soft carbonation, slightly grainy in texture, and crisp in the finish.

D - A decent pilsner that is easy to drink but mildly forgettable. One of Revolution's better recent efforts and a good summer brew. Had no problem putting down 22oz.

bomber into a DFH tulip/pint glass. May, 15, 2013 bottling date

Pours a crisp light golden color with a nice head that quickly dissipates. Crisp, malty aroma. Tad of lemon zest. Normal for the style. The taste is refreshing and malty with a tad of lemon, just like the aroma would suggest and just like a pils should be. Easy drinking, lighter bodied with mild carbonation.

overall nothing out of the ordinary, just a good pils.

22 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy golden straw color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, apple, pear, pepper, clove, cracker, bread, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance of hop, malt, and fruity esters; with good strength. Taste of lemon, apple, pear, pepper, cracker, bread, floral, grass, herbal spiciness, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, light fruits, pepper, cracker, bread, floral, grass, and earthiness on the finish for a bit. Damn nice balance of malt, hop, and fruity ester flavors; with good flavor robustness, malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Pilsner! All around great balance of malt, hop, and ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. Really enjoyed this one.
