Notes/Commercial Description:
We decided to break into a couple of barrels of our Belgian-style Dubbel (2 barrels out of 10…). It was aged for four months in Woodford Reserve barrels -- and yes, the barrels are stored in a horizontal position…

The notes of dark fruit come through nicely, and the caramel notes present in the base beer stand up well to the wood character. We will release the rest of the Horizontal Tango after about six months, and we can do a vertical tasting!

I this is a Family Matters reference? I'm pretty sure that "horizontal tango" is euphemism that Steve Urkel used to describe sex, but I don't want to google it because I'll end up falling down into a Miller-Boyett k-hole and it'll be an hour before I get this review finished.

Anyhow, tulip glass sold for 7 bucks at the brewpub. Alls the menu said was that it was a BA dubbel--no mention was made to the type of barrel or anything like that, so I'm sorry to disappoint all you weirdly pedantic barrel nerds out there.

The aroma was quite pleasant--big ripe dubbel fruits, light nodes of yeast, and a satisfying whiskey barrel burn.

The flavor... the flavor was quite barrel heavy. The BA description says the fruit and caramel nodes stand up nicely against the wood, but I have to disagree. This was wood, then some char, then some alcohol, then some more wood, and then just a bit of malty bready roundedness at the back. Certainly not bad--a lot like a smooth, blended whiskey--but not exactly a world class BA beer.

Served on tap at the brewery. The appearance gives off hues of deep red with some purple and brown as well. Minimal head upon pour and no lacing to speak of. The nose starts with some nice candied flavors along with caramel, and dark fruit. Towards the end, the bourbon comes through and presents nice vanilla and oak notes. The taste starts with vanilla followed by candied grapes, dark cherries, and the Belgian yeast notes. The barrel character comes on strong at the end. This one is full bodied with light carbonation. Overall, a nice and unique double with a nice barrel presence.

Served in a snifter at the Revolution brewpub.

A - Tan foam settles to a thick collar, near-complete cap, and splotchy lacework. Dark plum body that has a hint of transparency to it.

S - Loads of bourbon, vanilla, caramel, coconut, and a touch of oak. Barrel overwhelms the base beer; there's a bit a nebulous sweetness from the dubbel, but little else. Not sure I would have guessed the base style to be honest, but the bourbon and barrel flavors are quite nice.

T - The flavor has a bit less bourbon and a bit more of the character of the Dubbel; caramel, light cocoa, cola, clove and a touch of spicy yeast. Add in some oak and vanilla and there's a vaguely Dr. Pepper-ish flavor profile, but with a light bourbon kiss in the aftertaste.

M - Chewy, sticky, medium-full body, with low tannins and light alcohol warming. Carbonation is decidedly lower, but not overly so.

D - I enjoyed this a fair bit, especially after a stretch of weak barrel-aged beers from Revolution. I'm a tad wary that so many barrels were held back, as only 4 months has already overwhelmed the base beer. That being said, I tend to like Woodford-aged beers so it's not a problem for me, but those seeking balance may want to look elsewhere.
