Notes & Commercial Description:

An imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, and named after our exalted leader, Emperor Deth. This one is definitely on the dark side.

A play on Josh's name, this Russian imperial stout is aged in two different types of bourbon barrels (Heaven Hill & Old Forester) then blended for the resulting thick and dark brew.

Deth's Tar is a barrel-aged Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout. It is brewed with a host of wonderful specialty malts, flaked oats and oat malt to impart a rich, silky mouthfeel and deep, complex malt flavors and aromas reminiscent of dark baker’s chocolate, fresh brewed coffee and caramel candy. We also utilized Warrior as the main bittering hop and English Fuggle in the whirlpool to impart a clean balanced bitterness and hints earthiness and spiciness dancing around the intense malt backbone. The brew then spent seven months resting between Heaven Hill and Old Forester bourbon barrels. The resulting blend is Deth's Tar, that we bring to you once again on draft and in 22-ounce bombers in commemorative packaging.

2013 batch in honor of Star Wars day.

A-black almost no head and a faint tan lacing

S-toffee, alcohol, a little oak and some marshmallows

T-a little one dimensional and still a bit hot. The bourbon absolutely dominates this one and I can't pick up on much else

F-hot, big bad burn going down. Carbonation is perfect though the heat is strong with this one.

O-I loved this on draft but all the bottles have been a little disappointing. The bourbon is quite strong and even age has not helped much. Regardless I am a sucker for a Star Wars related beer.

Served in a Boulevard tulip snifter.

Gotta hand it to Mr. and Mrs. VDubb: a night out at the movies followed by being treated to some flautas and tasty beers? Hard to beat. This digestif of sorts pours a bleak obsidian topped by over a finger of baked khaki foam. The nose comprises bourbon, roasted malts, chocolate syrup, a twinge of burnt pretzel, and a bit of coffee floating through the ether. The taste brings in more of the same, the barrels providing a touch of buttercream and vanilla with their wood. The body is fairly hefty, with a light moderate carbonation and a decently chewy feel. Overall, a damn fine barrel-aged impy stout, definitely the highlight of the evening (sorry, "Interstellar", you just didn't cut it).

Thanks to Rado for sharing this one at AndrewK's tasting.

Bottled 9/16/13.

Pours an opque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, toasted oat, cocoa, vanilla, bourbon, wood, and slight smoke aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, vanilla, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great balance between the barrel aged aspects and the base beer.

Bottled September 16, 2013. Poured into snifter.

A-dark black with brown edges.

S- bourbon, chocolate, slight roast with some cocoa

T- tons of bourbon sweetness with chocolate. Almost marshmellow quality.

M- fairly full. Slightly sticky.

O - delicious BBA stout!!!! Up there with uncle Jacobs. A slight tier below BCBS, parabola, Blacknote.

Pours a dark opaque black with a finger of tan head. It's a beautiful beer in a glass. Some nice tan lacing as you work through it.

Smells of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon (coconut), dark fruit, coffee, a touch of booze.

Tastes of chocolate, vanilla, coconut, dark fruit, like a sweet raisin flavor, sweet coffee, and touch of booze.

Mouthfeel is full and smooth, like you'd expect from a high alcohol BA stout.

Overall I'm pleasantly surprised by this beer. I had little to no expectations for this beer. I'd put it close (but not quite) to the same level as BCBS. I'd be surprised if I could pick this out versus BCBS in a blind tasting (although the smell may give it away). It's delicious and quite surprising. I'm now ISO this beer :-). Luckily my favorite bottle shop has a few more bottles.

Beautiful silky viscosity dark stout with a bold sweet complex malt flavor. Carbonation in mouth feel - wafts of caramel, coffee, dark chocolate. Definitely an Imperial is style, flavor and abv. Had on tap at the brewery $9 for a 9 Oz pour. One of the best I've had. Outstanding.
