Consumed December 4th, 2013 from a Firestone Walker Proprietor's Reserve Series tulip/goblet glass. Poured at 40 degrees F allowing warming throughout tasting.
Beer is two shades lighter than black; dark brown with deep garnet highlights. A respectable one finger light tan head forms and hangs around long enough to become a thin crown, providing minimal sheeting. This is actually the worst aspect of the beer, as it turns out, and I have no complaints so far!
Aroma is vanilla, coconut, strong spirits, cane sugar, melanoidins. More of a barleywine smell than anything else.
Flavor is subtle and complex. The stout component of this beer is present in the chocolate note, giving way to a hot, boozy gingerbread and molasses affair. Some woody bitterness mingles with a relatively sharp, peppery note towards the end. Lingering moderate sweetness.
Mouthfeel is smooth, nearly velvety. Some alcohol heat.
Another winner from FW. World class.
