Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
California, United States | website

Style: American Strong Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our newest blended strong ale, Winter Wookey, comes just in time for the California winter this year. A blend of Wookey Jack and un-oaked Double DBA, Winter Wookey brings dark chocolate covered dried cherry, candied apple, orange zest and toffee flavors together in a complex, warming blend. Deceivingly drinkable for its size, Winter Wookey balances a big, malty body with a complementary spectrum of hop aroma and bitterness.

Served chilled on tap at Freshcraft in Denver.

Winter Wookey is a stronger version of the Wookey Jack, which is fantastic.

Served in a snifter, it has a dark brown color and thick tan head.

Aroma is boozy and hoppy with great fruitiness.

Flavor is intense and bitter but really well done.

Had 22oz bomber that I purchased at tasting room in Buellton. Poured into goblet.

Nice dark brown, approaching black. Poured with quarter to half inch head of small bubbles. Still has a thin layer of bubbles 20 minutes later.

The aroma is full of rye and grapefruit from the hops.

The taste is nicely balanced. I taste rye bread, without the molasses. The spiciness of the rye and the grapefruit and pine resin from the hops combine nicely. There is also a little roasted flavor and a note of chocolate. I don't know offhand what the IBUs are, but there is definitely enough bitterness.

The mouthfeel is smooth with a lot of body at the start but dry and almost astringent in the finish. The high carbonation keeps it quite refreshing.

I would gladly drink this again, but later, not two bottles in one night. I wish I knew where I could get it around Kansas City. It was a fine souvenir of my latest trip west.
