When I saw that FW was releasing this, I was really excited to try it, being a big fan of hop-forward saisons. Unfortunately, this one didn't come to KC right away, so I went out and got a bottle online. Enjoyed out of a 22 oz bottle with a bottling date of 3/7/2014 and instructions to enjoy within 120 days of bottling. Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack Series tulip glass.
Appearance - A pretty attractive looking beer. Pours a multi-hued hazy golden with lemon yellow highlights and faint brassy orange lowlights. Atop the body sits a two-finger head of stark white, active bubbles that dissipate quickly, after about 30 seconds, growing into larger bubbles evoking the texture of a sponge and eventually settling as a thin ringlet around the edge of the glass. No lacing to speak of.
Smell - Rustic notes of sourdough and alfalfa with a spicy, almost fruity note from the underlying yeast profile. There is also a gentle bite of white pepper and floral hops to round out the aroma.
Taste - The primary components are definitely the yeast and grain, with spicy-sweet notes of clover, sorghum, and white pepper coming through boldly. However, there is a nice offset from faintly pungent hops, with a slight bitterness like baby greens or lemongrass. Finish has just a kiss of sweetness but is predominantly dry.
Mouthfeel - Light bodied with moderate to high carbonation providing for a prickly feel on the tongue.
Overall, a solid offering for the style. As far as I'm concerned, there is a flagship for the American-style, hoppy saison, and while this is a very tasty beer, it still doesn't touch the standard bearer. That said, if it were readily available, I would certainly buy it from time to time as a change up.

Bomber bottle w/ a 3-7-14 bottling date
Pours lightly hazed darker golden. Off white head, that leaves decent bits and irregular bars of lace.
Pleasant tropical fruit nose
More tropical fruits, including melon on the palate with light pepper.
Nicely done, highly enjoyable and well crafted. Helped wash down some BBQ in a palate cleansing and fat cutting manner.
Go get some.

Appearance: 1/3 inch head, high carbonation, gold in color, clear
Smell: golden apples and hay
Taste: golden apples, Sauvignon Blanc grapes, Belgian spices, pepper and hay
Mouthfeel: sweet start with a dry bitter finish, light bodied and high carbonation
Overall: I really enjoyed Opal and its complexity. A nice and crisp saison and another great beer from Firestone Walker. I will get this again if I can find it.
