Notes/Commercial Description:
Our interpretation of the rustic Wallonian Saison style is a harmonious blend of rustic grains, spicy yeast and unique sauvignon blanc tones. Inviting lemon grass and gooseberry meet peppery spice and fresh grain aromas. Spicy Belgian yeast create a complex yet dry and refreshing canvas with splashes of citrus and stone fruit with a bright tropical white wine finish. Hop bitterness is assertive yet harmonious rounding out slightly tart and refreshing.

Bottled 03/07/14, poured into a tulip

A- pours crystal clear bright yellow-golden straw color with a big foamy and sudsy white head that retains long after the pout, as carbonation bubbles continue to shoot up the glass, some short lasting lace left behind as it settles

S- peppery spice is immediately noticed from the yeast with aromas of lemon-grass and fresh grain. Stone fruit and other fruity tones kick in, before ending with earthy, musty and earthy aromas

T- fruity and peppery up front with notes of cellar must and yeast. The addition of dry hopping adds just enough bitter hops to provide a complimentary balance, slight tangy note on the back end that actually gives a vinous character, finishes dry with citrus peel, grain and lemon grass

M- medium body with moderate spritzy carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a crisp-yet-dry finish, just a hint of alcohol lingers

O- another winner from FW, super-refreshing saison that hides the abv quite well. The dry finish leaves you wanting more

bottled 060614. bomber split into tulip.

A: couldn't be a paler shade of yellow. super light. bright white frothy head. good retention.

S: great spice and zest but even better fermentation characteristics. mild sulfur level. but really hoppy. earthy, bright citrus hops. smell European but also slightly citra-like. very inviting.

T: spicy, zest, slightly tart. a little bit of hop bitterness in the finish but it is fleeting. a little vinous as well. really getting some tasty white wine, green grape notes that I am thoroughly enjoying.

M: a step below champagne like carb but still manages to be smooth. medium bodied.

D: too drinkable IMO. really refreshing and tasty stuff. the perfect summer saison and another home run from FW.

Hazy, straw-colored in appearance. Head retention is weak for the style, fading all too quickly. Lacing is minimal. The usual phenolic yeast aromas are present. Some nice citrus notes - I'm even getting some pineapple (American hop contribution maybe? Hmmm... Looks like there's some Amarillo in there). Dry white wine character with a slight acidic quality. Not bad.

Dry and fruity flavor with some tartness thrown in. A definite vinous character. Dry white grape, pear, and lemongrass are coming through. Mouthfeel is initially a bit harsh but calms down in short order. No alcohol intrudes into the flavor.

Not among the top saisons, but still a solid offering from Firestone Walker. The tartness is an interesting element and adds to the depth of flavor. Worth a try, at least.

Side poured from the 750mL bottle into a pint glass. Excited about this one, love the Firestone Walker Brewing Company and love Saisons, so this should be good.

Appearance - Pours a nice straw yellow color with an ample two finger soapy head that dissipates relatively quickly but leaves behind a nice, sticky lacing on parts of the glass. Packaging is standard FWBC. Beautiful presentation.

Smell - A little floral notes, spices, coriander, and some hay in there. Complex nose, very good smelling brew. Has some citrus and lemon notes as well.\

Taste - An excellent fruity zest right up front which dissipates throughout the drink. A little bit of the saison funk, which is to be expected, as well as some very light hop notes. Very well balanced.

Mouthfeel - Very effervescent, well carbonated, finishes clean and smooth. Very good texture and feel to this brew.

Overall - This is an excellent saison that I would recommend to any fan of the style. FWBC did not disappoint with this offering. Very well balanced, nothing about it overwhelms. Condor recommended and approved.

650 ml bottle dated 6/20/14 poured into a Kane Brewing snifter.

A - Pours a nearly transparent pale straw with a finger of airy white head that dissipates quickly. Settles to a ring around the glass that sticks around for a while.

S - Wonderfully dense floral, herbal, grassy, piney nose. Some lemon and a dash of pepper too. Really really wonderful.

T - Much of the same as the nose. A bit more subdued though. Belgian yeast really shines through with a lot of herbs. Juicy throughout but finishes with a grassy, earthy dryness.

M - Medium body with medium to light carbonation. Very nice feel to it.

O - Very solid. A lot of saisons tend to be overcarbed to the point where they're abrasive. Opal is nice and smooth yet still dry. Nose is amazing. Taste could be improved on a bit, but its simplicity is almost where it shines. Pretty good beer. Would buy all day long in 4 packs.

Opal is quite a pungent beer. The hops have a tea and apple aroma along with the dank. perhaps some yeast and funk. Personally, I don't like it.

Pours a slightly hazy straw color. A tall wispy head forms then fades away. Very carbonated.

Taste is okay. It's dry and refreshing. I get some mild tea and apples like in the nose. Also I sense some peppery phenolics and bready malts.
Drinks thin on the palate with a refreshing dry and semi bitter finish.

Overall the downfall for me is that the flavors don't really meddled all that well.
