Thirty miles north of Barrelworks lies the fertile Santa Maria Valley. Its warm days and cool marine layer-fed evenings allow for a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables to be grown in its rich soil. One of Santa Maria’s crown jewels is locally grown raspberries. We jumped at the opportunity to ferment fresh local raspberries with one of our Barrelworks creations. Behold Bretta Rosé! A low-alcohol Berliner Weisse style ale, acidified and matured in French oak puncheons for 6 months, is the foundation for this gem. Add 1000 lbs. of fresh raspberries, allow a secondary wild fermentation for 4 more months and voila (!), we have a crisp effervescent concoction, bursting with raspberry perfume and flavor, a rosé color, bracing acidity, and a clean and refreshing finish.

Consumed July 8, 2014. Poured into a snifter glass from a corked, caged bottle.

Beer pours an interesting grapefruit flesh color. A one finger pink head forms from a fairly vigorous pour. The head disappears completely within about one minute. Fairly clear beer, until reaching the bottom of the bottle, then, some cloudy.

Aroma is tart and acidic with a note of leather. A berry aroma (raspberry? ) is also present.

Flavor is very similar to aroma: slightly tart and acidic. Funk is only present as a slightly musty leathery note. Finishes fairly clean with a sharp note of sour fruit and wheat tang for farewell.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, I am impressed but not excited. Maybe some more time will change this one for the better.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing.

Small fizzy head notes, hint if lacing that fades quickly, slight pinkish golden straw color.

Nose is exploding with raspberries and tart Brett funk, big raspberry out front, with nice Brett funk and lots of nice lacto funk. Flash of strawberry, over ripe seedy soaked into the earthy strawberry, very bright fruit and sour funk, lots of seed and stem tannins, with a faint touch of oaky barrel. Light acetic acid with all the great funk.

Taste is again loaded with fresh raspberry, fresh fruity and seed stem tannin notes, etc. Into big barrel, vanilla toasted oak in the front this time. Nice sour lacto as well, acetic acid, tart fruit, and even a mild Brett funk with lambic style sourness. Mild vinous notes, tart fruit, etc. Finish is sticky little flemmy tart sour fruit feel, mild dried lactose feel too, long lingering tart fruit and fresh raspberry.

Mouth lighter bod but not bad, decent but lighter carb.

Overall awesome and fantastic!

Light, crisp, raspberry and tart, a touch of perfume in the finish.

Shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice light hazy pink straw hue with a thin head that faded to leave a light halo and thin wisps.

S - Aromas of raspberries, brett, sour tartness, great awesome lacto notes, earthy over route strawberry, great brett, awesome raspberry seed. Killer nose, not a fruity raspberry but still on the plant.

T - Taste is nicely tart raspberry, great oaky vanilla. Faint malts, More awesome brett, funk, faint smartie candy notes, really awesome lacto. Lambicus acid, missing that nice raspberry stem and seed that the nose had. Still, this is delicious.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, clean, typical for the style.

O - Overall this was pretty freakin awesome beer, great raspberry notes and awesome funk and lacto, incredibly.

A: The rose pink of a rosé wine. Crisp, sparkling, with no head.

S: Raspberries, vinegar, oak, green apples, and grapes.

T: The tartness dominates, eventually dissipating into an aftertaste of raspberries and oaky chardonnay.

M: Puckering and crisp.

O: One of the best sour blonds I've had. Although the tartness overpowers all other flavors at first, the aftertaste is pleasant and well balanced.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy orange with a bit of a pink tinge. Almost no head. Thin collar.

Smell - Ooh, raspberries. Brett. Some stone fruits. A little oak.

Taste - Raspberry up front. Some oak. Some pale malts and a moderate sourness. Gets a little stronger in the back.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - I expected more from it, but it's still good.
