Props to PMR for sharing his growler with me, Iflesh and IPAviator (that we drank while he homebrewed). We sipped this in his patio under an umbrella on a hot southern california summer day.
We poured into our pint glasses...a rich mohogany hued brew with a very light bubbly khaki head filled them up. Nice coloring and a little viscous on the swirl. Sweet malty pines filled my nose as i inhaled. Quite a solid fragrance but not overpowering.
As i drank, sweet caramel actcenuated by floral hops graced my tastebuds. The hops blended very well with the sweet malt and wasnt overpowering... which i dont mind but this one was very nicely blended. A little chewey and smooth on the palate. Very drinkable but you may want to watch out. I think this one has some abv to it but you'd wouldnt be able to tell.

08/03/06- On tap at the Toronado in San Francisco, CA.
Presentation- Via the tap into a tulip style glass.
Appearance- Deep ruby red in color, maybe chestnut. Slight 1/4 inch frothy head with spotty lacing left behind.
Smell- Really nice barleywine scent. Sweet caramel malt, pine scented hops and a nice cherry scent in the nose. Keeps you sniffing.
Taste- Taste does not dissapoint either. Very mellow brew, but keeps your taste buds interested. Not super hoppy, but enough to really catch your attention. Very solid malt background and a light fruity taste. Super well rounded.
Mouthfeel- Smooth, a bit thick and syrupy with a low carbonation level.
Drinkability- I like the mellow and flavorfull mouthfeel as a hopped up and stronger barleywine would have been too much on a hot summer day. This one hit the spot. Not sure of the abv, but I'm sure it's around 9% or so.

Went to check this out at Toronado after reading a recent forum conversation.
Pour: Draft to tulip glass. The beer has a ruby colored body with a half inch of light tan head that, while thin, is very dense and sticks to the glass all the way down and leaves an unbroken cap of froth over the surface. Just a couple bubbles making their way from the bottom of the glass to the top.
Nose: A very piney hop aroma dominates the smell right off the bat. It's a bit chalky with touches of maple, berry tartness, and mint. I'm not sure if, from the aroma alone, I would know this beer from a 2IPA.
Mouth: Very smooth full bodied mouthfeel with a complex overall flavor that includes pine and grapefruit rind in the hops (not as strong as the aroma would suggest), cocoa, charcoal, floral characteristics and some maple flavor right up front. The exhale is warm but does not carry any alcohol flavors and the aftertaste is bitter but located solely in the back of the mouth - nothing lasts up front.
Really, really unique and delicious.
