Picked up a fresh case of this from my local distributor last week. Serving size...12 oz bottle poured into my new Lagunitas Mason Jar.
Pours pale orange with a 1 inch head that dissipates slowly leaving behind a decent amount of lacing on the glass. Carbonation appears to be perfect!
The aroma has a bit more sweet malt to it than typical hop driven west coast IPA's. Not so much caramel...just more sweet. Hop notes are, as expected, citrus...some faint tropical notes...with a fair amount of sticky resin.
Very balanced flavors. Even with the big bitter finish...the malty sweetness still comes through to save you from mouth puckering hops dominating. I will say, that while this is balanced...I prefer hops to dominate my IPA's. A little too sweet for my every day IPA. 7.5% abv is present but at appropriate levels. I had this while eating some fresh cut pineapple, which paired very well with the hops. Hot day+big IPA+fresh tropical fruit = NUMNUMNUM!
Medium to full bodied. Lays down smooth with sufficient CO2 to keep the beer bouncing on your tongue so as to not get too syrupy sweet.
Overall, for me, I think this is a bit too malty for a standard IPA. Having said that...everything else about this beer is wonderful! I am a big fan of Firestone Walker and this is a great IPA to represent their "stamp" on the craft beer world.
