Bottled on 5/1/13
Poured into the Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head IPA glass.
Appearance: (4.5) Pours a transparent, bight gold with soft orange highlights. A thick, 2 and a half finger tall, off white head quickly forms and has great retention, leaving tons of lacing behind as it recedes.
Aroma: (4.75) Bright, citrus forward hops leap out of glass towards your nose; Tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, lime juice and pine resin. A lightly sweet, bready malt becomes more and more apparent as the beer starts to warm.
Taste: (4.5) Wow, a huge burst of hops explodes on your tongue the moment the beer enters your mouth; pretty similar to the aroma, except a stronger emphasis on the pine-y, earthy hop notes. The tropical character that is found on the nose is all but nonexistent on the palate. Grapefruit, pine and light lemon are the main players in the hop flavor profile. The beer finishes very dry with a slightly toasted malt backbone to help balance the assertive hop bitterness. Lingering notes bread and bitter grapefruit.
Mouthfeel: (4.5) Full bodied with medium to high carbonation.
Overall: (4.5) An amazing IPA from Firestone, that definitely blurs the line that separates a double IPA from the a single IPA. Matt Brynildsson, the brewmaster of Firestone has been tweaking the hops that they dry hop with during the last 6 months or so, and has now started to dry hop with a little bit of the very tropical smelling hop, Citra. The tropical aromatics only improve this already fabulous IPA. Highly recommended and drink this IPA as with every other IPA, FRESH.
