Been refraining from reviewing this one because of way-out-of-date bottles.. But finally found one that was less than a month old. WOW! what a difference freshness makes! Pour is nice and golden with excellent lace. The smell is of citrus and floral hops. So much more pungent from the malt-messes that I've had before. The taste follows the nose with notes of lemon zest, orange, and dank pininess. The feel is excellently balanced. I so glad I finally got a fresh one and now see the worthiness of the score for this beer. As always, very good Firestone Walker. (567 characters)

I came across this at a local Craft Pub in Thorndale Pa. The joint tends to be a bit overpriced, by craft standards, (e.g., when they first opened I walked in, saw Boulevard Tank 7 on tap, and ordered it. I had paid $7 for one at another spot a few weeks earlier, was surprised when the tab came in at $10 for that one.) in any event, I perused the beer list and saw that they had Union Jack for $5 a pint. I like IPA's and hadn't had this one. So...

It presented with a head about 3 inches. The taste was richer and somewhat less sharp then most of this variety. I think that it's actually one that a Belgian brew afficianado could appreciate. Personally, I like Belgian brews but am more of a British Isles descent beer drinker. However, this is very nice stuff, among the upper echelon of the IPA's that I've had, and there have been a few. Union Jack is hearty and flavorful without sacrificing what a hophead needs. If I had to pick a group of core beers, it would be one of them. (995 characters)

I have seen this beer many times and had wanted to try it so I finally made my way around to getting a fresh pack and chilled it down in the fridge. It has 7.5% ABV and has a world class 100 score by the Bros. With a score like that I was maybe having very high expectations. It is a great beer, but let’s look at what it has to
offer.

Look-It poured a crystal clear golden tinged light amber color that shimmered like the breast plate of a Greek god (little “g”). The head was at first very foamy and white, but quickly settled into a thin film. This rather common behavior is due to the sugar content, just as an fyi. So, even before I smelled or tasted it, I anticipated some sugar content from the malts.

Smell-I smell candied orange and other citrus aromas. The malts are candied caramel and toasty malted grains. It is quite nice, but not as complex as you would expect from a world class beer.

Taste-It tastes of orange and pine. The malts nicely come through late and cut the bitterness from the hops, but the bitterness isn’t very high. The malts are honey-based and are very nicely complimented by the orange citrus and pine. I couldn’t find the IBU content on this beer, but my advanced palate would estimate that it has 70 IBUs. I hope I am right on that. Could anyone check that for me?

Mouthfeel-It has a lite medium-bodied feel with an appropriate sweetness level that doesn’t delve into the annoying strong syrupy feel and taste that some IPAs have.

Overall-It has a nice flavor and aroma. It is relatively well-balanced, but some of its flavors are separated a bit. It is refreshing and moist and finishes clean. You should try this beer, but I don’t think it is a world-class brew deserving of the 100 from the Bros. (1,756 characters)

12 oz can, 4/27/15, poured into a pint glass.

A - Golden orange, clear, with a one finger head, that moves to a thin lace. Good retention.

S - Citrus, orange, mango. Striking aroma.

T - Follows the nose, with some grassy piney hops. Malts lend a bubble gum sweetness.

M - Carbonation is medium, heft is good, finishes clean.

O - Finally came across this, and was not dissapointed. Not as dated as the Double Jack (9 months) that I purchased at the same time, so it has more hops semblance. Recommended. (519 characters)

This is probably one of the best overall IPAs that is easily accessible almost everywhere in teh country. Very smooth and palatable with amazing notes of tropical fruit and hops on the nose. (190 characters)

I love getting my hands on this when it presents itself. An excellent representation of the west coast style that drinks the same every single time I've had it. Cheers. (168 characters)

Deep brownish golden with low soapy white head. Low carbonation. Smells piney with a bit of orange. Not much else but good. Great tasting ipa. The beer starts sweet then fruity with apricot and bitter lemon rind. Pine resin and dense wet grass finishes long with a mild malt sweetness. Silky smooth texture. Low bite. Very clean except for the minor pine resin aftertaste. One of the more drinkable IPAs out there. Overall, one of my favorite IPAs out there. Tons of flavor and well balanced. (492 characters)

On-tap at McP's in South Lake Tahoe, California.

Well worth the hype. Excellently balanced IPA that stays true to the style with a little hop bitterness bite. Very nice and juicy. Perfect malt character. Smells just about the same way with caramel malts and citrusy hops. Easy drinking and delicious. Too bad this isn't in Michigan. (333 characters)

This is my first experience with Firestone Walker and an amazing introduction this is! The moment that I pried open the cap I immediately smelled the aroma of hop intensity. A good two fingers of fluffy white head developed that left behind beautiful lacing. The color is a deep gold typical of top IPAs.

The taste is grapefruit hop goodness with a medium mouth feel. This is a fantastic IPA and one that i will seek out again! (428 characters)

Great IPA, definitely one of my favorites. An initial blast of hops with a bitter, but smooth grapefruit aftertaste. Try the cans if you come across them, I prefer them over the bottles. (186 characters)

From a can dated 4/28. Nice looking beer, smells very fresh but not overly aromatic - just doesn't jump out at you. The taste is pretty much perfect if anything too well balanced just because nothing jumps out at you. The feel is the best part of the beer. Perfect body and carbonation, a pleasure to drink. (307 characters)

Of the thousand or so IPA's i've tasted lately, this is a pretty good one, not that i've ever had a bad one, but this one is a nice blend if you want wet, then hoppy. (166 characters)

I love the citrus, grapefruit character of this beer. Not a thin IPA, it definitely has some malt body. The citrus hop taste comes in and it transitions to woodsy flavor with a crisp finish. (191 characters)

Gold pour with thick white foam; great lacing. Toffee/BB Bat candy aroma. Malt forward with solid hop flavor to follow. Medium lite mouthfeel. I thought this was hair better than Sculpin. (187 characters)

One of my top 5 favorite IPAs. I'm fortunate enough to love less then 2 hours from the brewery and let me tell you, if you ever get the chance to visit, do it. The brewery is gorgeous not to mention an awesome restaurant next door. They always have some sort of a special treat on draft. Overall, amazing beer. Amazing brewery. Keep it up Firestone. (349 characters)

Just saw this in Chicago and I had heard good things so I gave it a try.

A - Brilliant amber color and very clear. Good sized rocky head with light lacing.

S - Good NW hops with the standard citrus notes shining through with some herbal and light floral tones. There is also some grain/malt character present.

T - Significant hop flavor that last through the drink with a citrus character and hints of pine being predominant. The floral, herbal, and grassy notes also assist the hop profile but not strongly. It has some of the malt in the middle with hop bitterness to finish crisp. This beer is definitely hop forward but reasonably balanced by the malt backbone.

M - Medium mouth-feel with a soft bitter hop finish. Moderate carbonation which doesn't add or detract.

Overall, a solid IPA that I wasn't disappointed with. I like the balance of malt with the citrus hops but I prefer more hop flavor in my IPAs. This beer is not heavy in any way which lends to drinkability but there are many more IPAs that are just as drinkable with more flavor. If you haven't tried it I would recommend it but don't expect this one to be significantly better many of the other popular IPAs on the market.

From a can, pours a golden yellowish red color, very clear, with a large three finger white head. There is a lot of carbonation and somewhat of a soapy lacing. The odor is fresh, citrus, grapefruit, mandarin, pineapple, mango, apricot, floral, resin, pine like. The taste is refreshing, citrus, grapefruit, lemon, orange, pine, resin, bitter in the backend. (360 characters)

Deep golden with a touch orange on the color and clear with a dense ivory head that leaves spotty lacing. Citrusy, piney, dank bright hop aroma. Little sweetness up front parts for big grapefruit citrus flavor and a pine kick at the end. Medium feel with nice carbonation and drinkability. Just a solid IPA. I'll reach for it once in a while. (347 characters)

L: Such an awesome looking IPA. Pours a dark golden color, rich in texture, carbonation and vibrant color. Nice cream colored head about an inch thick on top. Really excellent lace as well.

S: Spicy pine, almost a sprucey scent, hint of lavender and citrus grapefruit. Pineapple as well.

T: Oh wow. I remember drinking this on tap at their tasting room, and it tastes just as pleasant from the bottle. It has that floral hoppy taste you come to expect from an IPA, and a booziness on the back end. But in the middle there is this warm blend of biscuits, honey and citrus that is somewhere between grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. On second pour you can definitely taste a bit of pineapple. Sweeter than your average IPA, and a little more like a pale or summer brew. But the big piney hop flavor is there which is unmistakably an IPA.

F: Prickly, dry, sweeter than I would prefer but still very solid. tingly carbonation with a spicy and dry finish. Pretty heavy also, you can feel the 7.5% in this one.

O: An absolutely stellar American IPA. It embodies the key characteristics of an IPA, while having a nice little flavor and twist of its own. The honey/citrus middle amongst the spicy spruce hoppiness and alcohol aftertaste really make this a unique and flavorful IPA. Great balance, almost a perfect brew. (1,319 characters)

Nice amber color. No nose or very little. Very balanced between sweet and bitter. Finishes slightly sweet. Very good beer but not an IPA. I would call this a pale ale. (169 characters)
