12oz bottle poured into a milkshake pilsner glass. Bottled on 02/09/12.

Appearance: Hazy orange-gold. Off white head which settled down to a thin skin across the top with some rocky islands here and there. Plenty of persistent lacing in strands and islands.

Smell: Just right citrus (orange dominates, with some hints of grapefruit) with a balance of malt at the end. Very aromatic.

Taste: Very well blended and perfectly balanced AIPA. Citrus and malt right up front, which transitions smoothly and easily into a bitter hop finish which is mostly grapefruit and a hint of pine. The bitterness lingers a bit, but not so long as to become annoying. The hops are the emphasis here, but it doesn't slap you around - very smooth and balanced.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, nice thickness with no hop oils sticking to the teeth.

Overall / Drinkability: A very drinkable AIPA and very well balanced. Hop forward, but not overpowering. Dangerously drinkable really, the 7.5% ABV is not at all noticeable. A very well made beer and now I wish I had a 6 pack. I will have to pick up and try again when it is closer to the bottled on date to see how the hop flavor holds up over time. If this is what it was like when it was bottled almost 5 months ago, it should be quite good when fresh.

Pours a golden amber with an off-white head - good retention and lacing.

Smells of citrus, orange, mango and malt.

Taste is a big bitter orange rind up front followed by some sweet mango and a slight chewy malt. Finishes dry and a little woody. A nice crisp IPA with just enough sweet to balance the bitter hop punch.

From the 355 ml. bottle marked: Bottled on 04/08/12. Sampled on July 21, 2012.

It pours a golden copper-yellow with a soft but small head that lingers and laces.

On the nose the sweet malts take the back page as the piney, earthy hops roar up the nostrils setting off all kinds of inviting sensations.

The body is medium to heavy and also smooth.

The flavor is full of hopped bitterness which coats my throat and lingers well beyond the session. Yet the 7.5% ABV is impossible to taste. For people who love hops you are going to like this one.

Served on tap at Texas Arizona in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a crystal clear dark copper to amber in color. The beer has a finger tall dense dark beige head that reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: There is a light aroma of rich caramel malt sweetness and strong aromas of pine/resin and citrus/grapefruit hops.

T: Moderate amounts of caramel malt sweetness. On top of the malt body there is a strong flavor of citrus/grapefruit hops as well as some lighter notes of pine/resin hops. There is a light amount of bitterness. Overall, the beer is very well balanced.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with moderate dryness in the finish.

O: This beer is very enjoyable, easy to drink, and I would gladly have this one again. There is a really nice taste and smell for this beer.

I picked this up as a hedge that it might show up in the top 100 beers of fame. That is one of my goals, and I'd hate for this beer to knock me back once it gets 1000 reviews.

The smell and flavor has a bunch of grapefruit/citrus presence. The flavor is very strong, but not overwhelming. I like the simple, clean flavors in the Union Jack.

This is a very good example of an IPA. Not really a shock if you ever had Walker's reserve.

You REALLY gotta love hops to enjoy this beer. Im a hophead, so I thought this was a quality brew. Borderline double IPA, perhaps a few more IBUs would have put this over the top for me. Not much lacing for the quality of this beer, but a nice head size and great retention. Comparatively speaking, Union Jack easily matches up to other good IPAs, and in some cases surpasses them in quality. I personally would still go for a Stone IPA, but if the store ran out I wouldn't hesitate to pick this up.
