A - Pours a golden amber color with a slight copper hue, and has about a one-finger frothy foam head.

S - Pleasant hoppy smells with hints of citrus and pine.

T - A sharp hop taste up front that's soon complimented with a nice balance of malt on the finish. A slight yeast taste with more hints of citrus. Very hoppy, but not the "hop bomb" like some of the other IPAs.

M - Medium bodied, with and average level of carbonation. Leaves a little bit of the taste in the mouth after the sip has been swallowed.

O - This is only the second beer I've had from Firestone Walker, but I've enjoyed both very much (my first being Wookey Jack). I can see myself drinking this one throughout the night due to its fine balance of malt in the finish, which makes the initial hop flavors even better. One of the best balanced IPAs I've had so far.

A 355ml bottle with a bottled-on date of May 29th 2012. Purchased at the GBBF and kept in my fridge.

Poured into a Delirium chalice. A deep golden-amber hue with faint haze and good carbonation. Produces a huge head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patch surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of intensely fruity hops: notes of grapefruit, orange peel, citrus, white grapes and subtle pine. This is underpinned by sweet malt, dry yeast and a whiff of booze. Flavoursome.

Tastes of overwhelming juicy hops with a malty backbone and a strident bitter finish. Notes of grapefruit, orange peel, citrus, pine, faint grape, caramel, malt sugar, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Quite sweet, but balanced by a powerful spicy bitterness upon swallowing. A hint of solventy booze lurks in the background. Mouthfeel is smooth, spicy and dry, with tingly carbonation and good body. Highly astringent - dries the palate. Aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops and a hint of sweet malt.

Impressive - tons of character in this brew. Like someone has driven a truckfull of hops over your palate. The flavour and aroma are fantastic, and it feels balanced despite the malty sweetness. No complaints - if you love hops then this is the beer for you. Grab one if you see it.

Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA is a hazy, golden ale with a thin, dense, white head that has great retention and lacing. It has a huge, fruity hop aroma. It smells a touch sweet with otes of orange and caramel. It's pretty full bodied and quite smooth. The finish is a little loose and dusty. It has plenty of hop flavor but it's not very bitter. There is a sort of caramelized flavor to it, like toffee. The flavors don't fuse completely, but all of the different tastes I get out of this are good ones. A little bitterness lingers after the swallow. This is a pretty solid double IPA. It certainly beats most beers.

Poured into my new IPA-Specific beer glass that was designed by Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada. This beer was bottled on 12/6/12.

Appearance - This might as well be the best looking beer I have ever seen. It poured a nice bright golden-orange color with a tall off-white head due to a vigorous pour. A nice soft, frothy head leaves decent lacing spread across the glass. The carbonation is clearly visible. Overall, this is a great looking beer and deserves a 5.

Smell - Great, well-balanced smell with a combination of citrus flavors (prominently grapefruit with a slight bit of orange), piney/evergreen flavors, and the malts linger in the background. I was expecting a bit more, but it may be because it was bottled 2.5 months ago.

Taste - The citrus/grapefruit flavors hit first followed by the piney/evergreen flavors with the malt/biscuit flavors lingering in the background. Bitterness on the bank end is definitely noticeable from this hoppy IPA, but the flavors somewhat remain and the bitterness is not overpowering.

Mouthfeel - This is a medium body beer with good carbonation. The dryness/bitterness lingers for a bit with some stickiness on the lips.

Overall - This is an excellent well-balanced IPA and the appearance is one of the best I've seen. A great combination of citrus/piney hop flavors with hints of malt/biscuit flavors. This is definitely in my top 3 for India Pale Ales that I have tried to date. This is definitely going to become a more regular go-to beer for me in the future.
