So this is like my 6 or 7th solo bottle of Abacus in the last month or two, i got alot of it and figured i'd get around to a review at some point, i guess it's that time.
First off a quick note, it seems like there is some differance in the bottles, some bottles are rich and full with great bourbon tone, warmth, and depth of richness, and some bottles just seem hollow and shallow overall. it is split about 50/50 or so, just want to point that out. This bottle i'm drinking now is one of the better ones, even though im sitting in a 85f room without AC drinking a 13% BW, i'm really digging it. Anyway...
Color is a rich decadent mahogany hue with an antique tan colored head fading to a collar.
The aroma on this bottle is excellent, The bourbon had strength to balance and cut through the luscious caramel, and there is woody notes of oak and the barrel acting as a canvas that the other aromas build off of.
On the palate this is great, not as exceptional as the aroma, but that is probally my preferance as the heat is more integrated in the flavors then aroma. The richness of caramel is allowed to take the lead role with some maple and toffee whispers and the bourbon, while perceptable, plays support, along with the barrel and wood which pokes more on the finish.
The body has some viscosity to it yet is not near syrupy thanks to the 13% keeping it clean.
I dig this BW, and i am always undecided what to score it given the bottle variation i have experianced. Bottles have honestly ranged from A+ though C. I guess Abacus is like a box of chocolates, never know what your going to get.
12/18/11 this beer has lost some richness of caramel flavors and toffee, the heat has not faded out at all, and lost some depth. This one was best fresh, Fo Sho. I still have 3 more bottle to drink, will report any further changes.
