Enjoyed from the tap at Tops, served first in their new 10-ounce stange-style glasses, and then out of a little snifter, because I wanted more.
Deep amber-tinged crimson with very slight haze. Atop, a foamy, one-finger cream-colored head, slowly becomes very thin ring.
Such an incredible nose. Dark sweet cherries, vanilla, toasted coconut, oak, fig. Barrel notes definitely command the aroma, but the barrels are gooood. Also of note is the perfect integration of all the different aromas. I want to make a shampoo out of it.
The flavor is a nearly perfect reflection of the nose, though perhaps with a tad more cherry sweetness. Tons of barrel character emerges in notes of charred oak, vanilla and coconut, while the "barleywine" nature of the beer shows itself in a blast of sweet dark grapes and even some syrupy orange before the swallow and the slightly drying finish. So complex, but so well-blended.
As in the bottle, the mouthfeel is perfection. Creamy medium full body, very soft fizziness. The carbonation seems lighter here, but still works. Alcohol is picked up on the tongue and throat, but seems more like 8 percent than 13.
I hate to be that guy, but Abacus is even better from the tap being granted a cherry sweetness I didn't much pick up in the bottle. Incredible.

A - Pours a rich, red-tinged black with a small white head. Minor lacing and retention.
S - Nice scent bringing lot of barley wine and barrel elements with other notes of goodness. Dark fruits come through the most, along with caramel, chocolate, bourbon, oak, light tobacco and alcohol.
T - Tons of maple and vanilla, a bit nutty, very similar to smell, some sips had some alcohol in the back of the nose
M - Surprisingly smooth. Packs a punch but in all the right ways.
O - An amazing barleywine and another amazing beer from Firestone. This to me is the second best barleywine behind King Henry right now. Glad I have a few extra bottles.

2011 reserve series in a brandy snifter.
Alcohol notes overwhelm the senses from the get-go. Like a fine brandy only better.
This is why I now prefer beer to other alcohol choices.
Mouthfeel and aftertaste leave a very pleasant taste and feel that makes each sip a joy to behold.
Life is good when one of these are at hand.

Poured into a large snifter after about 20 minutes out of the ice bucket. Deep reddish brown with a fair amount of tan, creamy head. Good lacing, and the collar was thick at the edge of the glass. Aroma of toffee, caramel, some woody earthiness, sweet medium roasted malt too. Taste is of toffee/caramel, leather, woody-earthy, very lightly smokey (perhaps because of the campfire). So damn good. Mouthfeel is all that barleywines should be. Appropriately carbonated, medium creamy body. I could drink this til the cows come home; too bad I have to trade for it.
