About a 10 ounce pour in a plastic cup at Darklord day 2009. Body is a blackish brown mocha tone that hosts only a rim of skim tan head. Nose is brilliant with tones of bourbon and candied, dark fruit based malts. There is a soft rustic hint of a hop profile there also. Loads of bourbon initially flood the tongue. This is quickly followed by a very sweet malt character with tones of dark fruit like raisins and plums. All the time keeping a well balanced background hop character that adds nice zing and balance. Lots of vanilla and even some cordial chocolate show up. Mouthfeel is thick and desert like, very nice. Super smooth and attractively drinkable. This is one of the best Barleywines I have had. Firestone Walker, please bottle this one.

A - Pours a rich, red-tinged black with a small white head. Minor lacing and retention.
S - Nice scent bringing lot of barley wine and barrel elements with other notes of goodness. Dark fruits come through the most, along with caramel, chocolate, bourbon, oak, light tobacco and alcohol.
T - Tons of maple and vanilla, a bit nutty, very similar to smell, some sips had some alcohol in the back of the nose
M - Surprisingly smooth. Packs a punch but in all the right ways.
O - An amazing barleywine and another amazing beer from Firestone. This to me is the second best barleywine behind King Henry right now. Glad I have a few extra bottles.

2011 reserve series in a brandy snifter.
Alcohol notes overwhelm the senses from the get-go. Like a fine brandy only better.
This is why I now prefer beer to other alcohol choices.
Mouthfeel and aftertaste leave a very pleasant taste and feel that makes each sip a joy to behold.
Life is good when one of these are at hand.

Poured into a large snifter after about 20 minutes out of the ice bucket. Deep reddish brown with a fair amount of tan, creamy head. Good lacing, and the collar was thick at the edge of the glass. Aroma of toffee, caramel, some woody earthiness, sweet medium roasted malt too. Taste is of toffee/caramel, leather, woody-earthy, very lightly smokey (perhaps because of the campfire). So damn good. Mouthfeel is all that barleywines should be. Appropriately carbonated, medium creamy body. I could drink this til the cows come home; too bad I have to trade for it.
